Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am an Engineer working on a Flood Defense Project. On a day to day basis, my role is a mixture of site and office based; setting out structures, surveying completed works and to undertake quality management tasks such as inspections and writing Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love my apprenticeship in the Engineering/Construction industry as no two days are the same. The projects are always developing towards a finished product and at the end of each project you get to be proud of a finished article. Then move on to a new, unique project.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
In my role I have learnt many new practical skills like how to set out and survey using both traditional and modern methods. In addition I have developed my personal skills such as communication, confidence, teamwork and leadership.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My apprenticeship is very well structured as a day release programme. This means one day at university and four days at work undertaking my job role. At work, I have a mentor to assist me and ensure that my work goals align with my university course.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
All of my line managers have been very supportive of my course. So much so that this is my second apprenticeship with the company. My line manager attends regular appraisal meetings with my university as per course guidance and I know that I can always approach them is needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive the necessary time for my off the job training and should I have any questions regarding my university work, my colleagues are always happy to give me advice or share their knowledge to aid my learning.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My university course, units link very well to my job role. Not all the units tie into the work I am completing now on a day to day basis, however it will give me good knowledge for future work and the types of roles within the Civil Engineering industry.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
The Emerging Talent department are very keen on extra curricular activities and as such run the Gold DofE programme to employees and Charity initiatives. As a gold Armed Forces Covenant employer, Balfour Beatty also supports Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers who wish to volunteer their time.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They have been a very supportive and fair employer. As such I completed a Level 3 apprenticeship and have started a degree level apprenticeship with them. They have local projects and where I have worked away, have supported my in transport and hotel costs.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Always do research into the employer that you are applying for. They will always want to know in an interview that you have paid an interest into the company. Have a look at their goals and initiatives especially in terms of quality, health and safety and sustainability.
