Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role in. Balfour Beatty is an apprentice Civil engineer. This includes on a day to day basis, setting out work for subcontractors, using several different types of equipment ( GPS, Dumpy Level), keeping track of completed work on site, keeping track of time when work has started/ stopped, documenting the completed work on as-built drawings, ensuring work is being completed most efficient and most effective way as possible.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy the set programme a lot, it has a clear pathway with lots of guidance and experienced engineers around you to guide you. The programme pushes you to try and climb up the ladder at Balfour Beatty to better yourself.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Developed skills: leading a team, interacting with new people, documenting on drawings,
New skills: how to use a rotating laser and how to use a log book along side the roasting laser to find correct depths/ heights, GPS, dumpy level, lots of e-learning development through Balfour Beatty, lots of different courses as well- I will be completing my drone course this week.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is very organised, it has a clear stepped programme, with development stages regularly in place so you are constantly learning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Lots of support, I am learning new things every day and when I make mistakes, I am able to learn from them so they are not made again. Questions are always answered and there is no such thing as a stupid question with the people I work with, they offer a lot of time and support to try and help you progress.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
A good amount of support, we are checked in on regularly on how we are coping with the course and how we feel our grades are.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It allows you to become an engineer on site, but at the same time understand in depth the theory behind why certain things are done the way they are.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes we have the Brathay Challenge which all apprentices on the EP programme take part in its a combination on sport and theory events, including presentation.
