Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role involves working in a hospital within a department of a multi disciplinary team. To performing diagnostic non-invasive test to look at the cardiac muscle. This involves, preparing equipment, making sure equipment is clean and in functional order. Meeting and greeting the patient, explaining the test and making them feel comfortable, gain consent for the test.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

My course is ok. There is a lot of independent learning which is expected from us. Additionally there is a lot of online content to cover, which is not always covered during lectures. Overall it challenging in a positive way, to improve my learning; academic and also my clinical skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

During my time so far, I have learnt to communicate with a variety of patients. Including patients of all ages, from children to adults. Patients where English is not their first langue, I have learnt how to access an interpreter via the telephone, to translate. Overall, this changes they way I explain test to patients, depending on their presentation.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

For this year, it has been split into four modules of 7 weeks. This includes 6 weeks of teaching followed by an assessment week. For each module, there has been a timetable published, to explain what will be covered each week and any relevant reading material need to do prior to class.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer is very supportive. One day a week I attend University for the lectures and any practical sessions. My colleagues, always ask how the day went and what I got up to that day. They are very happy to go through anything from the lectures, that I did not understand.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive a lot of support, my team are very supportive and helpful. During this year, I have certain test I need to observer, my team allow me to watch these test and explain what is happening during them. Overall they are helping me towards my clinical and academic studies.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

As well as the academic side the clinical exposer I have is helping my to improve my clinical knowledge and skills. Learning at the University, attending the lectures allows me to put what I have learnt into practice. To improve the quality of care to patients, and there overall experience in the department.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, we have a gym on site that is open to staff 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Additional there are online exercise class to people to attend. There is a focus on mental health and well being, for example the library has books available for staff to borrow, for leisurely reading.

Why?
I would recommend the NHS to a friend because; it is a diverse work place. No day is ever the same, something is always changing and happening. You get to work in a team of multi skilled people, develop your clinical skills and knowledge on the job while providing patient care.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
My tips or advice for people applying to the NHS, would be to observe some work that you are interested in. To make sure before you apply, you will enjoy the rob and have a better understanding or the role when you go for an interview, this is something you will be able to discuses during the interview.
