Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor I manage numerous subcontractors giving me the daily/weekly/monthly activities of site instructions, forecasting and assessing applications for payment etc. In addition I complete other commercial activities such as pricing Compensation Events, raising Early Warning notices and subcontractor procurement.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme, it provides me with amazing opportunities and applying for this degree apprenticeship was the best decision I made. Although I am an apprentice I am given my own responsibilities and challenging tasks that really support my growth. Balfour Beatty has a friendly and welcoming environment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
My communication skills have improved right from the start of my apprenticeship, whether it is in face to face meetings, writing emails or other written communications, this first hand experience has also improved my confidence. I have developed many other hard/ soft skills such as team work, organisation & problem solving.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
My programme is structured so that 20% of my week is off the job learning. This means I have a dedicated day to complete my university work and BB are very supportive of my on the job studying. I have personal development reviews every 6-months to track my professional development.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive all the support I require, whether it is from my line manager in regular catch ups/ 1 to 1's or my wider team around. I always feel I have someone to speak to whether it is to support with any issues or general queries.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive alot of support, whether it is my line manager recommending helpful training courses to supporting with my university work. I also feel comfortable asking people on my project for advice on uni modules as they maybe expertise in a particular area, which is the bonus of on-the-job-learning
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I am able to apply the theory that I have learnt into practice whether it is general responsibilities or activities. I am just over 1/4 of my way in completing my degree qualification and feel as though I know a lot more about my role/ the construction industry generally.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Balfour Beatty provide many volunteering opportunities to give back to local communities and occasional social events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I cannot fault my experience so far, it has met all of my expectation and mores. I am gaining invaluable first hand experience, completing a fully-funded degree and have ample support and opportunities around me.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
My advice would to be to get yourself out there, whether it's work experience or networking. Although it is good to have the 'hard' skills for your desired role, BB are interested in what soft skills you bring/ who you are as a person as it's vital to have the ability to work in a team and the surrounding environment.
