Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Working as a sustainability apprentice couched with a design engineering team working on clean water treatment works. I help with design related tasks such as pre construction information as well as admin tasks like contributing to the team comm cell. I also use a spreadsheet tool to analyse the potential carbon or proposed projects.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The company has been great with many networking and induction events. They been supportive throughout of my apprenticeship programme and the working is flexible to accommodate the time for it. Every one has been open to sitting down and teaching concepts to me very patiently until I understand. Overall no compaints.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt much about how to work in an office and arrange and conduct meetings. How to organise my work. I have learnt many excel and data skills and crucially how to work out how much carbon a single project would use and then select the lowest carbon option.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My programme is a little jumbled. Most of the teaching is self structured learning with a live webinar event every couple of months. The programme is not obviously correlated to my day to day work which leaves a slight disconnect. The programme has been very professional throughout even with its faults
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer has been very supportive. The HR team made starting with the company very straightforward with events sign posting every Severn Trent specific skill I need to learn. They have distributed apprentice power skills workshop throughout the programme to teach me the skills they find most employable and required.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The training provider replies very quickly to any question I pose through their online BUD software. As previously stated their is a slight disconnect between the training curriculum and the day to day work I do but they have been supportive throughout that problem, finding ways to fill gaps where required.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
It's vaguely related but not really. Modules I've done so far have focused on thinks like cloud data computing which is something I will never do within my role. My role is sustainability analyst but apprenticeship is data analyst so there is some variance between programme structure and day to day role
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are some. There is a social event arranged tonight but it is far away and transport is not offered so I cannot justify the time or money commitment that going to this event would require. Socialising was possible throughout the induction week through hotel accommodation with other apprentices.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The benefits scheme offered by the company is excellent. The attitude of all my colleagues is very accommodating and all have been very welcoming. Flexi time and home working are also available to some degree which is great. The working environment is low pressure and enjoyable as far as I have experienced so far.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
You may have to do lots of chasing of contracts and job offers when first told you will get the role. This took a couple months for me but it all eventually came through. If you aren't successful with your first application you may get offered a second chance.
