Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
1/5
My role is to assist the qualified nursing staff in the Photopheresis department in where I work. I try to make there job run as smoothly as possible by keeping stock levels up and a tidy environment. I assist in clinical skills such as venous sampling and cannulation too. I stock up all required equipment on a daily basis. My responsibilities are a wide range of skills. I am also required to sort out patients notes and triage forms for the weekly triage. Fetching patients through on the bed state and discharging. I also assist at other hospitals for our outreach service. I enjoy meeting the patients and really getting to know them on a personal level.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
1/5
We as a class had a really bad time. Not only was it during covid we had quite a number of tutors for the maths and English and this really held things up. We got put forward to sit the exam when we hadn't even covered the criteria needed. This set us up for fail which knocked our confidence massively. So overall it has been very stressful.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
2/5
I have developed more skills since starting my apprenticeship. Among many my confidence is higher than it was when i started. I'm more confident when speaking and listening to other clinical professionals too. I have passed my Maths and English in which I'm most proud of out of everthing else.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
I will start on a positive. The support from our tutor was fantastic and I could not fault that. However as a whole the course was not organised for set go. The date to start to enrol and meet was never what was said. forms was filled in multiple times. meetings at collage never happed when they was set to. one day we sat in collage for 2 hours for no one to turn up. Once we did start the course after a very poor start it was ok it was just unfortunate it was during covid study was suspended but we managed and we did get a regular call from our tutor. The maths and English was just a joke from the start we had 5 tutors in total we had online learning which was very difficult and it took way longer than it ever should have. We got there eventually.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
We did get study suspended due to covid but that was everyone in the trust. I can honestly say that apart from that short time it was that the rest of the time I have been fully supported. I have had regular study days set on set days and never felt not supported.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
My tutor has been superb and really supported us all throughout the entire course I feel she could not have done any more than she has throughout. She goes above and beyond any needs we have ever asked. The tutors that have come in and out the time we needed have always tried their best too and been very good. It hasn't been consistent enough. We got used to them then they got taken away.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I have felt that the course has helped in a lot of ways. The areas covered in which I don't necessarily do in my role i have found really interesting and helpful when covering in other areas during covid. The mental health unit we did i found most helpful especially through covid.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
When I'm not working I like to spend time relaxing with my family. during winter months more so. During summer we like to get out and about walking and going for days out. Where i live we have a lot of woodland so we like to explore different trials. I dont really do any through work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think its a very nice environment to work and I feel looked after. The pension scheme is one of the best. You get 8 weeks holidays a year and full sick pay. This is something less to worry about should you ever need to be off with ill health. Not everyone has this privilege.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
I would tell anyone who is applying for a jog here. Firstly to get in the pension scheme from the start of employment. I would also say take any opportunities given to take them. I think there are lots of opportunities in these times and you need to grab them with both hands.
