Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I manage the School of Surgery and School of Obstetrics and Gyanecology. I have a team of one staff member who I manage. I am responsible for organising the trainees annual reviews, the Academic recruitment, liaising with Trusts to inform them of which trainees they will be receiving in their rotation. I also need to ensure that our database is constantly being updated with the correct information.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
I found I gained a lot of knowledge from the programme. However due to an administrative error, I started much later than the enrolment date so was behind on work before even starting. I found this extremely stressful as I had just started a new job which had a lot of back log due to the post being vacant for many months ontop of having to complete extra coursework which could have been prevented had I started at the correct time.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
When I started the apprenticeship I had just become a new manager and was managing a difficult member of staff. The apprenticeship really gave me confidence and knowledge to manage this staff member appropriately and effectively. I learned about management models which I have implemented in my day to day work and am also more aware of how I come across to other members of staff.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I found the trainer to be very organised and she set out clear goals for each meeting and work deadline and explained everything so I was never unsure of what needed to be completed. I believe the structure of the programme was good and very relevant to my work which made it easy to incorporate into my day to day work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer was very supportive. I had one day a week carved out for my coursework. However unfortunately due to my workload, I rarely got this and found I would complete the work either before starting work, in the evenings or on the weekend. My line manager however was very supportive, flexible and always encouraged me to take time out to complete the work.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My trainer was very supportive and would set up regular meetings to ensure I was clear on what needed to be completed and the timeframe. She would also help me if I had difficulty finding an answer for any of the course work questions. I cannot fault her level of support towards me. She was always very available via text and email and would happily set up an ad hoc meeting/call me if I had any questions.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I think the timing of the qualification was perfect as I had just started in a management role and had no previous management experience. The apprenticeship gave me knowledge and confidence to manage my team. I learned about many things that I could easily implement into my management role as well as learning about my management style and how to adapt it.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
Due to covid 19, unfortunately any social activities have now gone virtual. Our team does have a virtual 'coffee morning' catch up regularly to check in with each other and find out what is going on in staff's personal life, no work talk is allowed!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a very friendly environment. All of my colleagues are extremely supportive and approachable. I feel it is very easy to achieve a good working relationship with all of them and have never had any issues. I always have been made to feel like I am a valued member of team.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
I have been on many interview panels interviewing candidates and the main tip I would give is to do your research. Employers like to see that you have made the effort to learn about the organisation and their values. The employer also will be able to tell if the candidate has prepped prior to the interview.
