Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Neovia Claims/JLR warranty: Management of JLR warranty specifically with Neovia claims is one of my main projects/objectives as a quality student. Neovia are JLR’s third party warranty management company, whenever there is an issue with a built door, JLR will alert Neovia and they will alert the Quality team. A replacement door or CAT door as it’s referred to can be sent to the customer if the fault is one of our own. I am in charge with dealing with Neovia and sometimes, JLR themselves.
Metrology: One area of Quality that I chose was Metrology, this is where parts from different projects are measured, monitored, and tested on. One of my main tasks was to measure new L460 parts, like MAP Pockets, Top Roll, etc. I have learnt how to use different measuring techniques but mainly using fixtures and DTIs to conduct measurements.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Time Management: Being able to manage my time accordingly when ongoing multiple projects/tasks and making priorities to ensure tasks are done on time and to a high standard.
Teamwork: Working in a professional environment has made me realise the importance of working in a team. This allows more brainstorming and different perspectives from the view of another department and their individual goals.
Communicating with Customers: When working with customers it vital that a good relationship is built to ensure issues are dealt with smoothly and in a friendly manner.
Building Skillset: When I have little tasks to do, I offer to help the engineers and do any tasks they may need help with. This allows me to build my skillset by learning new operations and methods within the quality department.
Learning from Mistakes: During the year I’ve made mistakes and not met deadlines. My manager has taught me that it’s okay to make mistakes if I learn from them. When I’ve made mistakes, I remember them more so next time I’ll remember to not make the same mistake therefore making it a valuable lesson.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
A chilled environment and the usual workplace banter. My department were very friendly and are willing to have a laugh now and again, as long as you work hard and offer your support. Work hard, play hard.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Although I have enjoyed my year at Faurecia in the Quality department, I’d prefer to undergo a role more relevant to my university course in Mechanical Engineering. I am somewhat "obsessed" with cars and anything to do with cars. This is one of the main reasons why I am studying Mechanical Engineering at university. As engineering is so vast, it opens doors in many different sectors in the automotive industry, which is why I am currently here at Faurecia Fradley. Personally, I would like to work in developing engines and potentially in motorsports as well. Like I mentioned before, I am open to try different sectors as I believe I have a good understanding of how the process is.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Forvia to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Forvia
Don’t be afraid to fail or not get something first time around. The Quality team know exactly who you are, a student who probably had never been in a manufacturing plant. It’s best to take things slow first-time round, listening to instructions and asking questions. As long you are willing to learn from your mistakes that will help you to gain more knowledge. There is no such thing as a stupid question, especially if it helps to understand a process or task. Ask away, it’s better to know something than not to know. There will be some days that there is nothing to do. I would advise to ask around the quality department and offer your support, this shows that you are willing to learn.
