Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
On a day-to-day basis my job role includes: checking/booking patients in for clinics, creating paperwork and stickers for the clinicians to use. Checking patient notes at the end of clinic making sure they are coded correctly and then filed away in numerical order. Getting patients notes ready for their upcoming appointment if we already had a file for them. Scanning on any patient notes or results to their file. Texting patients who have an appointment coming up to remind them. Talking to patients on the phone booking them in or passing them onto the medical team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I find the course that I am currently doing very enjoyable. I am learning lots of new things everyday and there is always something for me to do. The team I work with are very helpful and are always happy to help me if needed or show me new ways of working. The academy before covid-19 had set days where we could attend lessons to improve our skills and catch up on any coursework. Overall it meets expectations and it has be a great experience and a good way to start my career.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Since starting with the Great Western Hospital I have completed my level 2 Business Administration apprenticeship and started my Level 3. During this time I have developed both my personal and professional skills including how to handle upset/angry patients, conflict resolution and communication making me more confident in work and everyday life. I have also learnt how to process letters and what to do with incoming post.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I always know what work I need to complete for my coursework and have monthly meetings with my assessor which we book at the end of each meeting. We try to work through the apprenticeship in order making it easy to understand and puts a structure to my work. The academy are always on hand to support me and sometimes we have meetings to talk through what I have currently done for my coursework and what is left to complete so they are aware of where I am with it.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My manager is a great support, is always there if I need a chat or to talk about something to do with my apprenticeship. The Admin team are always there on hand in case I get stuck or need some extra help. I also find that the department as a whole are very supportive with my apprenticeship always asking how I am getting on and giving advice if I need it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My assessor is a great help when completing my apprenticeship. We speak regularly and go through all my assignments before I start them. This gives me the chance to ask any questions and go through anything I don't understand so I can start it straight-away. My assessor is also just one email or phone call away in case I am struggling.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel like my qualification helps me perform better in my job role as I am constantly learning everyday. I am writing assignments from my experiences in my job role and evaluating on what I could do to improve next time. I am also writing about the job role and organization itself giving me a better understanding on who I am working for.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
I am not sure if there are many extra-curricular activities however they do get all the apprentices together at Christmas to celebrate. There are also training courses in the academy which we can go to that can help with our qualification and day to day work life. We can also get involved in fundraising for the Trust with Brighter futures however due to Covid-19 they had to stop events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
Yes
Why?
If you are starting out in working life it is a great place to get an apprenticeship. They have teams in the academy which are there to help and get you settled into working life. You are also working for a great organization which makes a difference to people. There is also great ways to progress further in your career and improve in your job role.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
When applying for a job read the questions carefully before answering them and re-read your answers before submitting. For the interview arrive early and dress smartly to make a good first impression. From personal experience it does take a while to start the job once you get it so make sure you have references and everything you would need to send over to HR at hand to speed the process up.
