Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I was part of the Ophthalmology team within the Machen Eye Unit at Warwick Hospital. My role was facing and non facing for reception and administrative enquiries. I worked with third parties, patients, families, and relatives - my roles mainly consisted of filing, scanning, maintaining medical records, corrospendce, booking appointments, and processing referrals.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoyed the programme. The internal and external customers were great to work with. There was a large amount of support from both the training provider but also the apprentice team and my line manager within the NHS. I feel like the course was completed in a sufficient amount of time.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I had developed an understanding for business terminology and functions. Organisational skills have also been developed due to principles such as the Eisenhower Decision Matrix. My understanding and application of Legislation and Regulation and their importance to the organisation has also been furthered. Communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills along with conflict resolution have also been improved.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The systems took a while to come to grips with and the normal structure that the course would follow was disrupted due to covid-19. Apprenticeships were actually put on hold for a period of time so that apprentices could use their full 37.5 hours to help the NHS with the pandemic. My line manager however was very good and allowed me to continue my training even during this time.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My line manager and the team I worked with were very supportive of the course. They were always very adaptable around my timetable and always allowed me prioritise meetings and my learning. My line manager was also good at providing a variety of off the job and on the job learning opportunities.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider was very good at giving support even when staff were furloughed and there was a larger amount of students per trainer. I was given contact details and told I could always send any queries I had about the work. Good notes and feedback were given for the course and my work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel like certain elements of the business aspect are very useful within the NHS. Understanding Legislation and regulation in terms of infection prevention control, general data protection regulation, health and safety, patient confidentiality, and also safeguarding. The conflict resolution training is useful when taking accountability and has improved how I manage feedback.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are lots of external learning opportunities to help develop SMART objectives for example. Extra independent training is also available to book through the ESR system within the staff intranet. Other social events such as the choir or meditation sessions within the religious chapel are also advertised on locked screens, newsletters, and the intranet.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think there is good stability within the NHS. There are lots of resources to improve professional development and they are willing employers in trying to assist your learning. The values of the organisation are relatable to most individuals and it is very rewarding work amongst the good support from management. There is also lots of room to expand and move about.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
As with any worker of student I would encourage people to know your rights. Joining Unison the NHS union is also a must. I think you must be used to working in fast paced environments and happy to take on some individual responsibility in terms of consequences for your actions and their effect on a patients healthcare.
