Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I am a service manager of 4 mental health in schools' teams working in Southampton. This is a new service as of Jan2020, which remains in mobilisation phase. I am in a operational leadership and management role which includes the strategic planning and implementation of this new service of all new pathways and processes, as well as the day to day operational components.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I really enjoy the programme.
The content is a very good standard. I also really enjoy working alongside people from other areas of work and other sectors which had broadened my thinking around leadership and management.
Despite it being on the weekend, which sandwiched between two long weeks of work is quite exhausting, I always feel motivated and keen for the teaching sessions.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
It has given the space to really focus on leadership skills and consolidate what I already knew and build new understanding. The first module was self reflecting which was incredibly helpful as a foundation to really think about who I am as a leader and where I want to be.
We are looking at strategy currently which is a perfect fit for my role leading a new service, and I have been able to practically apply the academic component of the MBA into a real-life scenario, so it makes it all the more meaningful.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
In light of the impact of COVID, the programme has remained well structured and delivered.
The content is available in advance and follows clear structure which is helpful, and we have the timetable for the whole two years which is really helpful for planning with work and home commitments. Really looking forward to some face to face teaching in the future hopefully.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My line manager is incredibly supportive.
I have been allocated 9 study days across the year to support with my studies towards the programme.
I have also asked for opportunities to expand understanding and learning linked to the modules in the programme which have been granted.
My only complaint would be that working all week then having a weekend of study followed by another week of work is tough on work/life balance and wellbeing. I am using annual leave to try and allow some break, between, but this is not always possible.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
They have always made themselves available via email or by booking a session with them. I have found them approachable and available to answer any questions. It is of course a lot of self directed study, so they give a good balance of answer questions directly, but also coaching me to find the answers myself.
Still a bit confused as to the apprenticeship vs masters component but hoping that will becomes clearer soon.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel that this qualification will absolutely make me be perform better within my role. It covers so much, all relevant to my role as a manager. It covers strategy and finance, something that before I have had no real experience in, but also allows the space to reflect on leadership practice which you otherwise wouldn't get.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
I am not sure as to whether there is any social activities or sports as such, however I have recently signed up to the Virgin Pulse event, which is around health and wellbeing and you work as a team. In my service we have a couple of teams who will be competing against one another.
There is also the nurses day event on 12.05.21

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have worked for Solent for 11.5 years (previously Southampton City PCT) and recommend it often to people. Like all trusts, there is high pressures when working in the NHS, however Solent I feel have a real and genuine focus on wellbeing of staff that from my conversations with friends and families working in neighbouring trusts, is not the case. I have have a wonderful variety of working experience and training experiences during my time in Solent and am proud to work for the trust.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
- Share all of your innovative ideas, Solent are always looking for staff to come in with innovation and creative thinking.
- Share all of your passion and experiences with pride.
- Reflect on things that didn't go as planned. We are all human and showing the learning is where the value sits.
