Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
On a day to day basis I am involved in making sure process and guidelines have been followed to ensue the quality of the software testing undertaken on the Smart Metering Program. This usually involves daily reporting, document reviews, spot checks, projects plans, monitoring timesheets but sometimes get additional requests outside of these tasks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
This is tough as there's different aspects to the programme. Overall I enjoy the programme I'm on and don't wish I was doing something else. It has provided me with great work experience opportunities alongside the degree and I have learnt a lot from the job. It's tough at time balancing everything but I have a very supportive network to help me out.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
During my time so far on the degree apprenticeship at CGI I've had many opportunities to develop my skills. I'm in a relatively new role which is client facing and has exposed me to many experiences of interacting with a client. I have also developed my presentation skills through presenting work back to my manager, directors and VPs. This is on top of the skills developed through my degree.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is very well organised and there's a big student community which is great. At times there's a lack of awareness from the project teams of what the apprentices are undertaken outside of their day job but on the whole everyone is understanding. We also have regular calls within the company to discuss anything in relation to the apprenticeship with the apprenticeship manager.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
There's a high level of support from CGI and a huge number of people I can speak to including my line manager, my people manager, my university mentor, the apprenticeship manager and of course all the other apprentices. Whenever I have struggled there's always been someone offering to help or offer solutions.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The university provide support but it's up to the individual to engage directly with it. Personally I prefer to speak to my employer in the first instance however any module tutors I've spoken to have always been more then willing to help and support me in my training.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Personally I find that the qualification doesn't impact my daily work too much at the moment however it definitely provides that foundation of knowledge in preparation of my career as an IT consultant. Additionally it has taught me many transferrable skills particularly in relation to my writing skills, research skills and being able to construct and argument.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
At work there is a sports and social network that I have joined. This network subsidises many extra-curricular activities such as evenings trips out, tasting events, meals out (pre-COVID) and some regular sporting activities. Additionally there's also many volunteering opportunities to engage with such as CSR activities, STEM camps, mentoring etc.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend CGI to a friend because the culture and vibe from the company is great. I'm treated well, with respect as a member and shareholder of the company. There are many opportunities available throughout and there's a real place to build a career within CGI. There is also great levels of support and I enjoy the work I do here.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
My main pieces of advice would be research consultancy specifically, it differs from many other tech companies and doesn't suit everyone so make doubly sure it's right for you. Other then that I would just remember to be yourself and be confident that you're the right fit for CGI and CGI is the right fit for you.
