Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I currently attend a training centre in Birmingham called MAKE UK, where I train for my job doing all types of engineering sections. Including things like welding, milling, turning, fluid power, bench fitting, mechanical maintenance and electrical. All these units are relevant to my job when I go back to site.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy the programme I’m on, it’s interest and relevant to the apprenticeship I’m doing. There’s many different sections and things to learn, to practice and to further develop. All sections are different in their own right but interesting to get stuck into and learn more.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
All skills I’ve learned are new. How to use a range of hand and power tools, how to use a range of machinery from drilling to lathes. I’ve also developed skills that will help me in a problem finding situation, techniques to overcome and adapt to changing situations at work.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is well organised. Set times and dates to be at centre and to then be back at work. The whole apprenticeship is over 3 years, the first being predominantly at college, then the final 2 on site with block release and day release to college to do further learning
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I’m in regular contact with my employer, and can pick up the phone to anyone whenever I need. My line manager is approachable and helpful to any of my needs, despite being at college and not at work. Then I can always contact the apprenticeship manager if needs be also.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
All the support and guidance I need is all there from the workshop tutors, all very helpful and very knowledgeable when it comes to their sections. All the tutors will go out of their way to ensure we have the best experience and best learning that we could possibly have whilst we’re here.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
If it wasn’t for my training provider, I wouldn’t have learned the skills I have. With having such a range of sections to partake in, I’d over never of got these skills from anywhere else. I’ve learned things that may not have been covered when just at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Without being on site much I wouldn’t know fully how social events work throughout the site or the company. I believe that there will be social events that occur in the evenings at weekends, I know that the people on site are a close knit bunch of who all get on.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The company is such a good company to work for, the benefits that are on offer aside from the normal salary are excellent, along with the work life balance too. There is also a lot of opportunity for progression within the company, which for me is a very important feature moving forward.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
When applying I would recommend that your application is as detailed and as thorough as possible, and to try and stand out from the crowd, show personality and don’t follow the crowd. I also think it would be useful to do research on the company, be able to show you know facts about them.
