I look after a team of 8 Mobile Technician Controllers, who in turn plan and look after the day to day running of our 83 Mobile Techs.
Our techs cover all of the UK and are based out of various depots throughout the country. My team are tasked with maximising productivity, keeping travel time to a minimum and making sure our techs have the tool/skills needed to complete a range of work.
We also make sure they are compliant to all regulations.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

It's helped me understand my team better and bond with them. Our company culture is to work hard and in turn that's rewarded, but we want everyone to enjoy what they do. I try to make sure my team are involved in our decision making so I get their buy in when we roll out new processes.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I've developed my team leadership skills, helping me deal with difficult situations and make decisions which are best for the business. My role has taught me that every day is different and you never know what's coming. You have to be able to adapt and keep agile so you can move with the challenges the business faces.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Not very. Your assigned a skills coach, I've had 4 in 18 months as they keep leaving. It makes it hard to progress when you have to keep going over what you've done and I've been told contradicting information by different coaches. Also there has been a lot of changes to the process so I've had to redo a number of pieces of work through no fault of my own.
However my current skills coach is very good, I've achieved more under her 2 months of guidance than I have in the previous months.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

At first not a lot, it was hard to balance my workload with finding time to do the apprenticeship. I had to do it in my working day which meant some work wouldn't be done. However now I make sure I take a day a week out of the business.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Again at first support was lacking. I was given a lot of information in a very short time, it was too much to assimilate. And then it was very difficult to get hold of my coach. There is a portal but nobody explained how to use it and it's not easy to navigate.
I do enjoy the course though. And I am learning.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I'm not sure how well it helps me preform. When I started it I was in a more junior role, now I've been promoted I feel I have most of the skills I'm being taught. I think it'll be a good stepping stone to a more advanced qualification, so I remain hopeful.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We used to socialise a lot at work, the COVID pandemic has put a hold on that for now.
We normally partake in the Shrewsbury Dragon Boat Race every year on the River Severn. We also frequently go out for meals and drinks and there's normally some sort of charity event being organised somewhere.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Enterprise Mobility?
Research the business and the role. Get in touch with a local branch and ask if you can shadow someone for a few days, don't be afraid to ask questions. Also try to plan where you want to be, the role your applying for is only a stepping stone.
