Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am an Admin Assistant for the Healthy Child Programme which includes providing support for Health Visitors and Nursery Nurses. My role includes sending out routine appointments for antenatal appointments, new born babies, 6-8 weeks, 9-12 month and 2-2.5 year development reviews. As well as this I answer the phones to parents who would like to speak to a health visitor that is on duty and delegate appropriately. I also change appointments where required. 1 day a week I am allocated to do my apprenticeship work that is set to me by my assessor.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my role as I am given a certain level of independence to get on with my daily tasks. I have learnt loads of new skills and love that I am gaining a qualification as well. I work in a team of 4 so I am also demonstrating team work. It is a nice feeling to be trusted by your employer.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed lots of new skills such as IT, customer service and time management. The IT side of things I have learnt how to scan on post, using and creating spreadsheets. There is also a customer service aspect to the role as we may not deal with clients face to face however it is a skill required via the phone and emails. I have learnt time management as I am not told what to do every day, I am left to get on with my role and use my initiative to decide what needs doing when and how to prioritize certain tasks.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It is well structured as we have the admin staff, then nursery nurses, health visitors and the Team Lead of the team who is able to provide support for all of the team. My apprenticeship programme is well organised as I am allocated 1 day a week to complete my assignments set by my assessor.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer as I receive regular 1-1's, annual personal development reviews, as well as invitations to ask for help or advice from Team Lead's daily. If I am ever unsure on something I am able to contact my Team Lead either verbally if in the office, or via email or messenger if working from home. They also check on our mental and physical wellbeing to ensure we are happy within our role.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive the standard monthly contact from my assessor via a video call (due to covid). I am also able to email my assessor any time if I have any questions or queries on my assignment set to me and able to receive a response within a few hours (during term time). I also meet every 12 weeks with my assessor as well as Team Lead for a video call to discuss any concerns/ provide feedback to ensure I am on the right track.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It has taught me the importance of my role and how I am relied on for the admin tasks to support the team who may not have the time to complete these tasks due to their other roles. A recent example I have learnt how to use SWOT and PESTLE analysis which has helped me to make decisions within my daily role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Unfortunately due to starting during COVID there have been restrictions with what extra curricular activities are allowed at work. My colleagues have advised me that normally we would be offered things such as 'Wellbeing Sessions' which include team yoga, shared lunches where the team bring in food and have a picnic, as well as regular team building meals out.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend to a friend as there are perks such as job security, fair salary as there are different bands that allow everyone in the same band to earn the same amount depending on length of service, good annual leave as the starting amount of annual leave a year is 27 days, and the trust have good values that make you feel reassured and supported.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
I would advise to ensure you understand the Trust's values before applying, which include compassionate care, working together, achieving ambitions and delivering excellence. It is important to understand these as the Trust pride themselves on their values and how they treat/expect colleagues to be treated and take these very seriously.
