Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role involves sitting in an investment desk within the Equities division at Aberdeen Standard Investments. On a day-to-day basis I conduct research on companies the team are considering investing in. This involves sitting in on meetings with the companies, often involving high level management. I also engage with sell-side analysts and analyse financial models and data to understand how a company is valued, and how that may change in the future.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, a great deal. I was given responsibility for researching key areas the team were interested in. This also included the opportunity to chair a meeting with the CEO and CFO of a FTSE100 company. I was then able to report my findings back to the team.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
As interns, we receive continuous guidance. Depending on the stream we are in, we are given weekly talks from colleagues throughout the business to help build our understanding. We are also put into 'coaching trios' with fellow interns, to provide support amongst ourselves. Weekly intern drop in sessions provide a further point of call for any support, and we are given a graduate 'buddy' to give us advice throughout.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Aberdeen to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Aberdeen
Don't be afraid to ask questions throughout the process, people genuinely enjoy asking them no matter how small or large. Equally, people are always happy to chat so if you would like to reach out to people you have identified that work at the firm, don't be afraid to do so. Finally, abrdn place great emphasis on collaboration. Try to highlight specific examples of collaboration and collaborate throughout the assessment centres.
