Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
I was set three assessed tasks: one trainee task, one group task and one group practice area task, during which I had to commercially assess a client and manage a live inbox, record a podcast on Taylor Wessing’s values and conduct an assessment of the tax implications of gifting a property via bare trust. I also attended a full spectrum of presentations and Q and A sessions from other practice areas across the firm.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was incredibly eye-opening, particularly as everyone I spoke to was very receptive to answering questions (some quite probing) and having follow-up conversations if necessary.
It was also beneficial that we were able to hear talks from a full spectrum of departments - even ones we might not previously have given much consideration to - as it put a range of specialisms on my radar and has encouraged me to explore them more.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I learned foundational legal research skills, particularly on West Law and Practical Law. I also learned how to research legal terms and precedents, extracting the lesson to always “go small” initially and broaden research outwards, rather than the other way around.
I also honed my networking skills, as my cohort was encouraged to ask as many questions and meet with as many people one to one as possible, forging nascent professional relationships.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Astoundingly welcoming - everyone went out of their way to answer questions and make themselves available for a chat where possible.
All employees mentioned the friendly, open and collaborative culture when asked what their favourite part of working for the firm was, something I saw reflected in my time at the firm.
I really noticed the teamwork in action, not just in open communication styles but also in how business is internally referred at the firm.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
It was phenomenally enjoyable. I learned some of the intricacies of servicing private clients, far beyond the top-line overview I thought I would get. My supervisor and buddy took pains to set me interesting, challenging work and gave me constructive feedback (and helpful pointers) along the way.
I came away with some truly practical information as well as what the daily tasks of a trainee in Taylor Wessing’s Private Client department might look like.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Taylor Wessing
Absolutely be yourself in the application process - Taylor Wessing is a very collaborative, multidisciplinary and eclectic firm and it employs a vast range of people. There is no need to fit yourself into a specific “type” in order to apply to the firm, just communicate why you’re passionate about the firm itself.
I would also say know the firm’s values inside out! They take them very seriously and routinely put them into action.
