Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Collaborating with a knowledgeable team in online or in person meetings, as a student engineer you are tasked with problems which involve the use of BIM and British Standards whilst working. There are also opportunities to listen to informative seminars/information events which enrich your experience.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Personally I was thrown into the deep end at the beginning of my placement however I still had lots of support during this time, this may differ for each person as it depends what stage of the project you are in.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed my understanding of BIM (BIM360, Revit, AutoCAD, Civil3D), understanding and using British Standards and Thames Water Standards, how to communicate and collaborate with shareholders and clients, how to structure technical drawings using ISO drawing standards.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Lots of support available, questions are welcomed (especially as a placement student, you are there to learn not just complete work). Many different types of people you can meet who might not be in your team but are always willing to help you. If you are not familiar with some things there is always online training modules which might be able to help you.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Depends what office you work in, some offices are quite quiet, larger offices tend to be more lively. Even if it is quiet you can always call people and receive guidance. You are also able to work from home on some occasions which is a bonus. Everyone is very friendly with my experiences.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I met a lot of different types of people, not just engineers which really broadens your view on the industry that you are working in. I have learnt a lot of stuff which might not have been highlighted in university and you get a real feel on what it is like to work in the industry.

What advice would you give to others applying to Arcadis
Have a little look on what projects Arcadis are a part of, have an idea on what interests you in the industry and how the industry can change in the next 10-20 years. Don't panic if you don't know the answer to any questions, take time to think about it and give a logical response.
