Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the virtual experience and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The virtual experience targets first year university students interested in developing a career in technology. It is mostly presentations, but we were also able to ask a lot of questions, both to experienced professionals and graduates who joined recently. The presentations are about trendy topics such as cybersecurity, which are probably unfamiliar to a lot of us, but the presenters were able to deliver it in a way that is easy to understand. We also had coding tasks to work on during the lunch breaks.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
The graduates who recently joined the firm definitely gave me a very comprehensive overview of the business and the roles. In particular, they talked a lot about working from home experience, skills that they found helpful, as well as opportunities available. I realised that the tech role is actually more diverse than I had thought, and there is a lot of flexibility in terms of the hardcore skills. There is a programme that provides training for people from non tech backgrounds, which is really valuable information for me.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Yes definitely. As a math student, I have very limited experience with coding. So with the coding tasks on forage and the help both from the discussion forum and from the people who support us through zoom, I was able to complete both coding tasks, which is very fulfilling. I also learned about cybersecurity and test driven design, both of which are new to me. Overall, it was a lot of new information for the two day event.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the virtual experience
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It is definitely more chill than I had expected. A fairly senior leader came across as very accessible and humorous, and is very willing to talk about her career journey. The recent graduates all said that the atmosphere is very friendly within their teams. Their team leaders gave them very realistic expectations and goals, and are very supportive in terms of the difficulties in their work. With very different backgrounds and thus experience with programming, they all said that they fit in well.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
I really enjoy this virtual experience. I was able to develop some technical skills that would be extremely important and useful, and I had a better idea about developing them further after the programme. In addition, I learned a lot about the roles of tech people within J.P. Morgan, and had a better understanding of how to best find my place in the broad range of roles. I was able to talk to a variety of people as well.

Recommendations and Advice

Would you recommend J.P. Morgan to a friend?
Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to J.P. Morgan
Because of the wide variety of insight programmes available (e.g. finance for non finance, tech insight ...) , you really need to think which one suits you the most. Some might clash with university schedule, so make sure to work that out as well. In terms of the actual application, it was just the resume and the application form. There were no cover letters or online tests or interviews, so there is nothing to stress about. Just make sure you know why you want this experience and polish you cv.
