Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a building surveying intern, my role involved carrying out repair and maintenance surveys, End-of-defects inspections, planned repairs, and annual fabric inspections of the company's properties. I also shadowed and assisted my senior surveyors during various estate inspections, Asbestos surveys, water risk assessments, and capital projects.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was responsible for planning and carrying out the building inspections of sites assigned to me and admin work. I was also responsible for various planned repair works where I was expected to liaise with contractors and track the progress of the job. Quotes for repair works of the branches I have surveyed were also passed on to me to be approved.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I learned how to carry out general surveys of a building and the related admin work. I was given manual handling and ladder training, Asbestos awareness training and, Legionella awareness training. As part of the placement, I have also improved my soft skills and professionalism.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

My placement mentor and line manager were there to support me throughout my placement. Weekly and monthly check-ins were also arranged to give me an opportunity to update them on my progress and talk about any challenges I was facing. The entire property team was very supportive throughout the placement.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture and atmosphere were very positive and supportive. They always put their employees' needs first. CBS was also highly ranked in the Great Place to Work awards.
