Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

The role involved carrying out various tasks on different projects that were given to me by the team. These were tasks such as performing structural and load calculations, producing technical documents, marking up technical drawings, using Design and Analysis software such as Tekla Tedds and Midas and checking RC detailing and Schedules. In addition to the tasks given to me, I was involved in various meetings and calls with clients. Finally, just being around the team in general, speaking to them and learning about the different projects there on etc.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given responsibilities straight from the start. Since the project I was initially working on was in the detailed design stage there was a lot of work needing to be done and a lot that I was able to help with.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have developed my existing skills, especially using software such as excel and AutoCAD, which will help when I return to my studies. Also, I have learnt how to use new software such as Tekla Teds and Midas Civil. Finally, my communication and teamworking skills have improved and my technical knowledge has significantly improved.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

The support I was given was good and helpful. I was always able to speak to any member in the team for help. When I was given work It was always well explained by a member of the team who would regularly check up on me to see how I was getting on.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture and atmosphere were a very nice and friendly atmosphere. Everybody was happy to chat with you and see how you was getting on or if you needed any help etc.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Arcadis it has gave me a good insight on how the industry and company works and definitely developed skills I can use when I return to University.
