Asset Management Product Intern Review

I was given several projects to work on across 3 different areas of the business - portfolio management, research and investment specialists. The portfolio management tasks involved building tools to help the PMs access and analyse the most recent market data. The research task involved building FX trade signals. The investment specialist task involved analysing the team's different funds, and suggesting improvements to marketing and the funds' structures to improve them. I gave presentations for all of the projects. I also networked throughout the internship.

Yes. I was given full responsibility for working on my projects (that were things that the team actually needed), completing them on time and for contacting people to give feedback and ideas for them. I was also given responsibility for finding people to reach out to for networking, and arrange any other activities that I wanted to be involved in, including shadowing people across the team, and completing follow-ups to and further work on my projects.

I used Bloomberg to access and import current market data for the different projects - this is something I was previously unfamiliar with. I also used Python to analyse data and create some of the tools - this is something I previously had a basic knowledge of, but the projects greatly improved my knowledge. I also gained presentation and communication skills when I presented my findings clearly to the audience, and when I was discussing the projects with my manager to get feedback.

Support and guidance was always available, but never given unless I asked for it. This gave me the perfect mix of independence to use my own ideas and complete things how I wanted to, and direction to help me fully achieve my goal when I didn't have the knowledge to do it myself. Therefore, support mainly involved feedback on my work, answers to technical questions, and discussions about my ideas along with things to consider. This made the projects very rewarding to complete.

Amazing, one of the best parts of the internship. People were always extremely friendly and willing to talk to me about their work or anything else relevant. They were also always willing to help me with my projects if I needed, and if there was something they couldn't answer, they would introduce me to someone who could help. I was included in team social events, including drinks and leaving dinners. I always felt a part of the team.

I fully enjoyed my internship. The work was very enjoyable - because the projects were things the team needed, it was very rewarding to work on them and complete them, and I learnt a lot of new skills including how to use Bloomberg and Python. Also, because the team was so friendly, it was a great environment to work in, and I enjoyed coming into work. The combination of these things meant that it is somewhere that I would like to work in the future.
