Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I worked as a software developer in a Scrum team as well as being a solution architect and a social value manager on the side.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I work directly with clients including in one-to-one meetings and contributed considerably with important architectural decisions. My code was integrated into the main project, once reviewed, along with everyone else's code. As part of my social value work, I delivered a work experience where I represented CGI in front of students.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learnt a lot about professional software development from build tools to code style. I was also presented with the number of opportunities to deliver presentations and develop my communication skills. My main project was a cloud solution so I had the opportunity to learn AWS and Infrastructure as Code.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
CGI has a variety of internal personal development tools, which I implemented to learn much of my technical knowledge. The working environment was incredibly friendly so I always felt happy to ask for help and was given excellent feedback and guidance. Most of this was done remotely though.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company's ethos and culture was one of the main things that attracted me to the company in the first place and it did not disappoint. I felt free to be who I was and really enjoyed the work with my colleagues even if most of it was delivered remotely. CGI is relatively flat company so you get on incredibly well with all of the managers I never feel afraid to share anything.

What advice would you give to others applying to CGI
If you're into STEM and have the passion, you'll do really well at CGI. I couldn't fault my placement with perhaps one minor comment about lack of support regarding acquiring accommodation when relocating. Many of my fellow placement students ended up in university student accommodation which was extremely expensive and required them to travel quite a distance. I however found a local professional accommodation which was ideal and much cheaper.
