Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role includes a daily catch up with my manager and bi-weekly standups with my team to discuss progress with the stories that we're working on. My tasks include adding functionalities to the system by writing Java code and also SQL queries to the database. As part of the internship there are also regular networking opportunities that are organized for all of the interns to make connections within in the company that will be useful further down our career.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I do feel like the project I've been given is going to be very useful and necessary for the end users and it would make a difference. I was involved in the requirements gathering and analysis, which including speaking to the operations team and taking notes. However, I didn't have too much responsibility to the point where I didn't have any support or opportunity to get help if it was needed which was good.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt a lot already, in just 3 weeks. I am a lot more knowledgeable about Java, having never seen or written code in a big project. I have also developed my communication skills with having plenty opportunities to speak to new people, both peers and my seniors. I have learn about a lot of new technologies that are used by the firm and I have also learnt how to write tests which was something I had never done before.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received as much as I needed, I always had the opportunity to reach out to my manager or any of the others on my team if there was anything I got stuck on or wasn't sure about. Everyone was always really happy to help, even if they were busy at that moment in time they would arrange a time that they could assist me. Of course, it was recommended to just ask for help after giving it a good try myself first.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is really great. Everyone at the office has a good work life balance and there was never any pressure to work long hours or skip breaks or lunch which was really great. Everyone in the office is also really friendly and it is a really nice atmosphere to work in. Also the interns in my department were all trained together so we all made friends and went for lunch and coffee together.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship - it has given me a great insight into what the role of a Software Engineer involves and also what it's like to work in a Finance company. I found the tasks to be really interesting and enjoyable and also the office was a really nice environment. There was also the opportunity to work from home 2 days a week although personally I prefer to work in the office. I can definitely see myself working here in the future.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend J.P. Morgan to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to J.P. Morgan
My advice to others applying to JP Morgan would be to write a good CV that stands out. Try to include extracurricular activities or different skills you have including languages. Practice for the coding challenges, although they aren't too difficult but if you don't manage to complete it perfectly still leave the code you've written in comments are it's still helpful for the recruiters. Prepare well for the interviews, there is a technical interview as well as a competence interview.
