Treasury Undergraduate Review

As the Treasury undergraduate, some of the main responsibilities were preparing the daily cash management requirements to ensure all funding is taken in line with the funding plan and to manage the company's liquidity daily. This meant maintaining and updating the cashflow to ensure its accuracy, and to accurately forecast future borrowing requirements. Using different treasury management systems, all treasury deals had to be inputted into the systems and managing the documentations of these deals, along with the execution of these deals or payments on the online baking system. Some cashiering tasks involved the processing and banking of cheques received, the management of all company receipts into HFE's bank accounts, and also retail receipts and working closely with the customer service team to allocate payments to customers accurately. Ad-hoc tasks involved providing cover and resolving queries.

Compared to the previous undergraduate, I had more responsibility due to having more access to certain platforms. I did feel at times where I did not have enough responsibilities however this could be due to a unique work environment where I had three different managers, so it was a changing team, and so being given new responsibilities may not have been as easy. But, I took the initiative to find ways to improve certain processes, so I was able to have much more responsibilities.

I have learned a lot of commercial awareness as I did not have the best image of what Treasury actually does on a day to day basis. My banking skills and attention to detail has improved massively and is very important in my line of work. Due to the importanct of interest rates in my job, my commercial awareness has developed a lot as I undertook a lot of market reserach to take initiative in planning against future interest rate rises which would affect the company's borrowings. My creative problem skills has also improved through Excel skills and I am much more confident on using Excel.

There was a lot of support and guidance at the beginning of the placement and a lot of involvement with the other undergrads at the beginning. Afterwards I would say the guidance sort of slowed down but overall if I asked for support or guidance I always got it. My interim manager was really nice to help me with my professional training and commercial awareness.

Since it's a Japanese company, the culture was really amazing. The offices were open so I was sitting right next to the head of finance and credit, and it was an open space. Everyone is really friendly so it makes it great to come into the office to have an open/free chat.

In terms of professional and personal developemnt, I enjoyed my placement a lot as it allowed me to understand what I want to do in my future career, along with building the necessary skills and experience needed for it. On a more social level, it may have not been as much as I had expected. There were not many social events, but this could just be due to the current economy.
