IT Operational Support Undergraduate Review

As an IT Operational Support Undergraduate at Honda Motor Europe, I supported the day-to-day operation and continual improvement of business-critical IT systems and services. My role involved working with a wide range of stakeholders across the business to monitor system performance, manage incidents and service requests, coordinate testing and releases, conduct access audits, and produce operational reporting. I regularly used tools such as ServiceNow, Power BI, Excel, SharePoint, SQL, and Microsoft 365 to analyse data, track service performance, support business users, and help deliver projects. Alongside operational support activities, I was involved in process improvement initiatives, reporting automation, undergraduate recruitment, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure IT services continued to meet business requirements.

Yes, I was trusted with significant responsibility throughout my placement and was treated as a valued member of the team rather than just an intern. I independently managed operational reporting, access audits, stakeholder communications, ticket analysis, and process improvement initiatives, while also supporting business-critical systems and projects across Honda Motor Europe.

Yes, I developed a range of new technical and professional skills during my placement, particularly in Power BI, Excel, SQL, ServiceNow, reporting, and process automation. I also strengthened my communication, problem-solving, and project coordination skills through regular collaboration with business users, suppliers, and senior colleagues.

I received a strong level of support throughout my placement, with my manager and colleagues always available to provide guidance when needed. At the same time, I was encouraged to work independently, which helped me build confidence and develop both my technical and professional skills.

The company culture was excellent and very welcoming. The team felt more like a family than a workplace, with a relaxed and supportive atmosphere where everyone was approachable, willing to help, and genuinely invested in each other's success.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and can honestly say it was one of the most valuable experiences of my degree. The work, people, and opportunities exceeded my expectations, and I cannot imagine graduating without having had this experience. It significantly increased my confidence, skills, and understanding of the professional workplace, while also helping me confirm the career path I want to pursue after university.
