Bridges Industrial Placement

What is your current field of study and why did you choose it?

I am currently studying Civil Engineering, which I chose because of my strong interest in Maths and Physics. I have always enjoyed problem solving and this is something engineers do every day. My interest in engineering grew further when engineers from Mott MacDonald visited my school to talk about their roles, which inspired me to pursue this field.

Where are you currently doing your placement and what is your role?

I am currently on placement with Mott MacDonald in the Bridges team based in Croydon. My role varies depending on the project I’m working on, as I have contributed to multiple projects requiring different skills. This has included carrying out structural analysis using software, performing design calculations, and assisting with design management tasks.

What are your main responsibilities and tasks in this role?

My responsibilities include completing assigned work within agreed deadlines, proactively communicating with engineers if I am unable to meet a deadline and ensuring my work is to a high standard. Tasks I have undertaken include running analysis in Midas, designing foundations, preparing forecasts, and acting as package manager for an asset.

What skills have you developed or improved during your placement?

Through the tasks I have been allocated, I have learned to use analysis software such as Midas and Autodesk Structural Bridge Design. I have also strengthened my soft skills, including communication, self-management, and organisation. These were particularly developed when I worked on two projects simultaneously, which required me to prioritise tasks effectively, communicate clearly with colleagues and manage expectations while keeping everyone informed of my workload.

What are your career goals after completing your studies?

After completing my studies, I would like to secure a graduate role in a consultancy firm where I can build on the skills and experience I have developed during my placement.

How do you think this placement will help you achieve your career goals?

This placement has enabled me to develop both technical and soft skills that I can apply throughout my career. It has also given me valuable industry experience which I believe is important to gain before graduating as employers often look for candidates with practical experience alongside their academic knowledge.

What have you enjoyed the most about your placement experience?

I have really enjoyed working on multiple projects that are each quite different from one another. This variety has allowed me to gain technical experience using analysis software such as Midas, design work and exposure to design management.

What advice would you give to future placement students?

Always be curious and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Mott MacDonald and have learned a lot during the year I have been here. This placement has given me valuable insight into the industry and allowed me to develop important skills.
