Industrial Placement
At Mott MacDonald
Placement (10 Months+)
What is your current field of study and why did you choose it?
I am currently studying Electronic and Electrical Engineering (BEng Hons). My course focuses mainly on power and energy systems, including areas such as electrical machines, power transmission, and renewable energy technologies.
I chose this field because I have a strong interest in how electrical systems operate at both a local and large-scale level, particularly in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. I am especially interested in the transition towards sustainable energy and in developing efficient and reliable power infrastructure.
Where are you currently doing your placement and what is your role?
I am currently undertaking my industrial placement at Mott MacDonald in the Glasgow office, within the Energy Networks division. I primarily work across the Advisory team and the Substation team, supporting a range of projects related to power system infrastructure and network development.
What are your main responsibilities and tasks in this role?
My responsibilities are project-based, encompassing both advisory and technical engineering work. I contribute to a range of onshore and offshore energy projects, supporting activities such as construction monitoring, technical due diligence, and the preparation of key deliverables including reports and technical documentation.
I have also assisted in developing engineering reports such as Basis of Design and optioneering reports, as well as supporting the development of a cost database and gaining exposure to substation systems and high-voltage equipment.
What skills have you developed or improved during your placement?
I have improved my professional communication skills, particularly when working with experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams.
I have also developed stronger problem-solving abilities, alongside improved time management and organisation when balancing multiple project tasks. This has helped me become more confident, independent, and proactive.
What are your career goals after completing your studies?
I aim to pursue a career as an electrical engineer within the power and energy sector, ideally in a consultancy environment. I am particularly interested in working on large-scale infrastructure projects such as transmission networks, substations, and interconnectors supporting net-zero.
How do you think this placement will help you achieve your career goals?
This placement has provided exposure to real-world engineering projects and helped bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice. It has also given me insight into how engineering and commercial aspects are integrated within project delivery.
What have you enjoyed the most about your placement experience?
I have most enjoyed the continuous learning and exposure to a variety of projects and teams. Seeing real engineering examples has helped bring academic concepts into practice.
Attending site visits and observing engineering work firsthand has been particularly valuable. I have also appreciated the supportive company culture and the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues on the technical, professional and personal level.
What advice would you give to future placement students?
My main advice would be to be proactive and take initiative in your learning. It is important to ask questions, even if you are unsure, as this is one of the fastest ways to develop your understanding.
I would also recommend making the most of every opportunity, whether that is getting involved in different projects, attending meetings, or speaking to people across different teams. Building relationships and learning from others can significantly enhance your experience.
Finally, be open to stepping outside of your comfort zone, as this is where you gain the most growth, both technically and professionally.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience or future plans?
This placement has strengthened my interest in the power and energy sector and given me a clearer understanding of the industry.
At times, being the youngest person in the room can feel overwhelming, but it also highlights your progress and pushes you to develop further. Over time, this experience has helped me grow in confidence and capability.
I am motivated to continue developing my skills and pursue opportunities within large-scale energy infrastructure projects in the future.
