What do you like best about your job:

What I enjoy most about my job is the supportive working environment. Everyone is approachable and willing to help, which has made it much easier to learn and develop in my role. I enjoy working as part of a team where people support one another and are always happy to share their knowledge and experience.

What makes it such a great place to work:

Galliford Try is a great place to work because of its supportive and welcoming culture. From the start, I've felt encouraged to learn and develop, with colleagues who are always happy to answer questions and share their experience. As a woman working in the construction industry, it's also great to see strong female representation across the business. Seeing women in a variety of roles, including leadership positions, highlights an inclusive environment and shows that everyone can succeed.

What advice would you have for someone starting out:

I'd say don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they're silly. Everyone starts somewhere, and people are usually more than happy to help. Try to get involved in as many different tasks as you can because it's a great way to learn and figure out what you enjoy. Be open to feedback, work hard, and don't worry if you make mistakes, they're all part of learning. Just take every opportunity you can, and your confidence and knowledge will grow over time.

What skills are important for your role:

I think some of the most important skills for a Trainee Quantity Surveyor are being organised, having good attention to detail, and being willing to learn. Communication is also really important because you're working with different teams, subcontractors, and clients every day. Being confident with numbers and problem-solving helps when dealing with costs and budgets, and good time management is essential for keeping on top of deadlines. I'd also say having a positive attitude and being adaptable is important, as no two days are ever the same and there's always something new to learn.

How is the work/life balance:

Work/life balance is really good. The team understands that having a balance between work and your personal life is important, and I've always felt supported. There's a good level of flexibility when needed, and while there can be busy periods, everyone works together to manage the workload. It means I can continue developing my career while still having time for family, friends, and my own interests outside of work.
