Civil Engineering Level 3 Apprenticeship
At Galliford Try
Level 3 Apprenticeship
How did you get started?
I had been working as a hairdresser at a salon in Warrington but reflecting on my interests from high school and college, I wanted a career that would challenge me academically, particularly in the areas of mathematics and English. I knew someone working for Galliford Try who told me about an admin role was coming available. I chose to do this from November 2022 until September 2023 when I was able to start my engineering apprenticeship with the business.
Why did you choose Galliford Try?
The person I knew within Galliford Try frequently spoke about the company and praised the support with career development. He also highlighted the strong ethical values upheld by everyone at Galliford Try. Understanding those core values and the great opportunities within the company, I realised that Galliford Try was an ideal place for me to begin and grow my career.
How does the apprenticeship scheme work?
The apprenticeship scheme spans over two years and involves rotating through various departments to gain a better understanding of each area in the business. The scheme also includes five modules, each differing from the last, spread throughout the duration of the program. Completing these modules requires a great deal of initiative and teamwork.
What skills are important for your role?
in my opinion the main skills that are important for my role as a Trainee Civil Engineer, include: communication - to be able to relate to different members of your team; critical thinking to evaluate about your work and find the best way to keep the works progressing; numeracy as civil engineering involves a lot of mathematics - and time management.
How are you supported in your role?
My manager is attentive and regularly meets with me to ensure I am comfortable with my responsibilities, as well as being okay with my home and work life. I also have a mentor who guides me through various aspects of civil engineering, and the site team are amazing; they go out of their way to ensure I understand the work and are willing to explain information in detail.
What has been your proudest moment so far?
My proudest moment so far has been the four-day camping trip which is part of the apprentice/trainee scheme. I was out of my comfort zone, in an environment where I had not previously met anyone before. I enjoyed meeting others in the same situation as me and I felt proud for developing new skills in an environment I felt wary about.
What advice would you have for someone starting out?
My advice is always be honest about how you’re feeling with your work and never be afraid to ask questions. Questions are an important part of growth and widening your knowledge. You don’t need to have everything figured out!
