Why did you choose Galliford Try?
I evaluated the current state of the construction industry and recognised Galliford Try as a thriving business in the sector. I was impressed by the projects they had completed and saw them as a company I wanted to be a part of. They had previously won awards for their graduate scheme, which also offered an excellent benefits like a company car, making it an attractive opportunity.
What do you like best about your job?
One of the things I like best about my job is the independence and freedom it offers. Making key decisions that directly impact the cost-efficiency and success of construction projects. This gives me a sense of ownership over my work, making each project a unique and rewarding experience.
How does the graduate/apprentice scheme work?
You are assigned to a line manager, and work closely with them on the projects they are working on. The scheme focuses on development and training in many different areas as an individual as well as a being competent in your role. The leadership programme with Take Point Training develops the skills, which we will need when we hopefully we become leaders in the business ourselves. This includes fun activities and trips with fellow graduates from all of our business units across the UK.
What skills are important for your role?
Effective communication skills are for negotiating with contractors, liaising with clients, and collaborating with other professionals such as engineers and architects. Attention to detail is equally important, as it ensures precision contract management and financial reporting.
What makes it such a great place to work?
What I appreciate most about GT is the focus on people; it's a company that prioritises your happiness and well-being. Every day brings something new, with fresh challenges to tackle and opportunities to learn from others. Working in a multi-disciplinary environment means I get to collaborate with a variety of roles, including project managers, engineers, designers, and more, which keeps the work dynamic and exciting.
What has been your proudest moment so far?
My proudest moment has been receiving my very own project to run. At the time I was only six months into the programme, however the senior members expressed they can trust me with such a responsibility, and they believe it was good opportunity to learn more.
What advice would you have for someone starting out?
Introduce yourself to as many people as possible and try to understand what they do, showing your willingness to learn and progress. Be yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask questions, or make mistakes, people understand that you are just starting out.
