Degree Apprenticeship

Meet Edith, UX Design Apprentice at BBC StoryWorks

“My role focuses on creating digital products, including websites for clients. What I enjoy most about the apprenticeships is that it combines paid, hands-on work with part-time university study. I’m able to earn a recognised degree while building real products and gaining industry experience at the same time.”

What made you choose a BBC apprenticeship?

“The BBC stood out to me because it's a mission-driven organisation where good design can have a real impact. The apprenticeship I'm on offered a funded degree, structured learning and the opportunity to work alongside experienced designers on meaningful projects. It’s also helped provide a clear pathway into UX without taking on student debt, which is a huge factor in my decision.”

What does a typical day in your role look like?

A typical day involves a mix of research, design, and collaboration. I might plan and conduct user interviews, synthesise findings into actionable insights, or create wireframes and prototypes in Figma. I also take part in daily meetings, stakeholder catch-ups, and workshops.

What something you’ve worked on that your proud of?

I’m particularly proud of leading a persona workshop where I facilitated sessions, synthesised research into clear, actionable personas, and presented them to stakeholders so the team could align on user needs. I’ve also delivered accessibility guidance that was adopted across our product.

What skills have you developed since joining?

Since joining the BBC, I've developed my skills in user research, accessibility and core UX methods, including heuristic evaluations, cognitive walkthroughs and competitor analysis. I've also become much more confident presenting my work, communicating design decisions and producing academic writing through my degree studies.

What surprised you most about working at the BBC?

What surprised me most was the genuine commitment to helping people grow.

There’s a real willingness to share knowledge, make time for others and support each other’s development. Knowing that people want to see you succeed has made a huge difference to my confidence and growth.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying/nervous to take the next step?

Apply even if you don't feel completely ready. Apprenticeships are designed for learning, not perfection. In the first few months, focus on asking questions, taking notes and building relationships. Most importantly, remember that you were hired to learn. You don't need to know everything from day one. Showing curiosity, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn can go a long way.
