From Sixth Form to Manufacturing: How Harrison Low Found His Future with a Howdens Degree Apprenticeship

About Harrison

Chartered Management Degree Apprentice (Operations – Manufacturing)

Before joining Howdens, Harrison was studying Psychology, Business and Criminology at Sixth Form while working part-time. He was keen to continue learning but also wanted to gain practical workplace experience and start building his career. The Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship offered the opportunity to combine higher education with hands-on experience across different areas of the business.

Why did you choose to apply for an apprenticeship with Howdens?

I wanted an opportunity that combined studying with real workplace experience. The apprenticeship allowed me to gain practical business knowledge, develop professional relationships and explore different areas of the organisation while working towards a recognised qualification.

How has your apprenticeship positively helped you prepare for your current role?

The apprenticeship has helped me develop confidence, communication skills and a broader understanding of how different parts of the business work together. Through a variety of placements, I have gained experience working with different teams and developed the skills needed to contribute to projects and business objectives.

Can you share a specific experience during your apprenticeship that has been beneficial to your development?

One of the most valuable aspects has been completing placements across several business functions. Working on improvement initiatives, supporting employee engagement activities and presenting ideas to colleagues gave me experience outside of my comfort zone and helped me develop my problem-solving, project management and presentation skills.

What difference has the apprenticeship made to your life?

The apprenticeship has given me valuable career experience while continuing my education. It has helped me become more confident, independent and career-focused. The opportunity to apply learning in a real business environment has accelerated my personal and professional development.

Reflecting back, what have you enjoyed most about the apprenticeship or work culture?

The support from colleagues, managers and mentors has been exceptional. Everyone has been approachable and willing to help me learn and develop. I have also enjoyed experiencing different parts of the business, meeting new people and gaining a wider understanding of how the organisation operates.

What would you say to someone thinking of applying for a Howdens apprenticeship?

If you are looking to gain valuable experience, continue learning and build a long-term career, I would strongly recommend a Howdens apprenticeship. The combination of development opportunities, support and practical experience provides an excellent foundation for future success.
