Before joining Howdens, Cade explored several career paths, including accountancy and engineering studies. Wanting a practical, hands-on career where she could develop technical skills and gain real workplace experience, she chose to pursue an engineering apprenticeship and build a long-term career in manufacturing.
Why did you choose to apply for an apprenticeship with Howdens?
I chose Howdens because of its strong reputation for developing apprentices and providing opportunities to learn and grow. I wanted to begin my engineering career with a company that would support my development and give me access to valuable hands-on experience.
How has your apprenticeship positively helped you prepare for your current role?
The apprenticeship helped me develop both technical skills and confidence. Through practical experience and on-the-job learning, I gained a deeper understanding of engineering processes, problem-solving and maintenance activities, allowing me to contribute effectively within the workplace.
Can you share a specific experience during your apprenticeship that has been beneficial to your development?
One of the most valuable parts of my apprenticeship was learning from experienced colleagues and working on a wide variety of engineering tasks. Being trusted with real responsibilities helped me build confidence, improve my technical abilities and develop the skills needed to work independently.
What difference has the apprenticeship made to your life?
My apprenticeship has given me valuable knowledge, practical experience and greater confidence in my abilities. It has helped me become more independent, develop a strong work ethic and establish a career path that I am excited to continue building.
Reflecting back, what have you enjoyed most about the apprenticeship or work culture?
The support from my mentor, managers and colleagues has been a highlight of my apprenticeship. Everyone has been approachable, encouraging and willing to share their knowledge. The positive team environment made it easy to learn, ask questions and develop throughout my apprenticeship.
What would you say to someone thinking of applying for a Howdens apprenticeship?
I would absolutely recommend it. An apprenticeship provides the opportunity to gain practical experience, learn from experienced professionals and build valuable skills while working in a supportive environment. It is a great way to start and develop a successful career.
