What are marketing placements?

Placements are also referred to as industrial placements, sandwich years or a year in industry. They are all the same, and take place in between the penultimate and final year of a degree.

A marketing placement student spends an entire academic year working for a company, before taking the skills they’ve learned back to university to complete their degree.

As a placement student, you’ll tend to work in one area of the business. However, these areas can be big! There’s digital marketing, offline marketing, PR, events, content marketing, consumer insights, market research and more. The world is at your fingertips.

You’re paid a full salary like every other employee, get to work on real-life projects and gain invaluable work experience on your CV. What’s not to like?

Here’s what a placement student said about their day-to-day work at New Balance:

‘My role involved assisting the wider team with product requests and providing planning and support for the EMEA lifestyle and performance teams. My day to day job included talent servicing, placing product orders for seeding requests for EMEA ambassadors, alongside managing a seeding program across accounts, and working on a growing seeding list / PR opportunities for each product drop, coordinating lists with numbers of pairs of shoes available.’ EMEA Marketing Placement Student, New Balance.

Why should you do a marketing placement?

There are loads of reasons why you should do a placement in marketing. Let’s explore some:

GAIN REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE

You’ll apply theory from your studies to real campaigns, data and projects.

BUILD PRACTICAL SKILLS

You’ll learn tools like Google Analytics, Canva and Meta Ads first-hand. And you’ll improve communication, project management and teamwork skills, which are essential for any marketing job.

STAND OUT TO EMPLOYERS

Having experience gives you a huge advantage over graduates with just a degree, you’ll be able to put real work on your CV like campaign reports or content pieces.

EXPLORE DIFFERENT AREAS

If you’re unsure of what area of marketing specifically you want to go into, a placement lets you test the waters.

BUILD YOUR NETWORK

You’ll connect with mentors, managers, and possibly even clients. These relationships can lead to job offers or reference letters.

Also, if you do very well on your placement, you might just get offered a graduate role for when you finish university.

Here’s what a placement student said about their year with Disney:

‘As you’d imagine with culture at Disney, a lot of it is upbeat and friendly. A lot of events and exciting perks to enjoy, and you can make many friends with the rest of the placement year students in your cohort. You also get to be valued by the team and learn from industry pros.’ Content Marketing Placement Student, The Walt Disney Company

How much do marketing placements pay?

Now we’re asking an important question. Yes, an amazing bonus to doing a placement year is that you earn a salary.

How much this will be will depend on your location and employer. If you’re based in London, you can expect a little more due to the increased living expenses.

On average, based on the reviews on Higherin, you can expect around £21,600 per year. Many will pay more, you’ll just have to see as you apply.
