Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My role involves analysing the capacity of existing civil structures and the feasibility of potential strengthening/repair options. This involves using various software packages to assess the strength and load effects on structures.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Throughout some of the projects I have undertaken I have taken a leading role in the assessment of structures, with technical help from senior staff, so I have had a fair amount of responsibility.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Working on the projects I have at Mott MacDonald, I have further developed my time keeping and organisational skills in a commercial setting. I have also had the opportunity to use many pieces of software, like AutoCAD, InfraWorks, Midas, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design and some amount of python programming.

I received an adequate amount of support when working and felt very comfortable asking members of the team for further assistance when needed.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The general atmosphere at the company has been very welcoming, as there were a variety of social events arranged by the office's sports and social team which made moving to a new city much easier.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I have enjoyed the work and responsibility given to me by the company in the later half of my placement, as well as the innovative nature of the team. However I did not enjoy some of the more repetitive work I had towards the start of my placement.
