Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I am an industrial trainee, within the water/infrastructure team. This year I have been involved in the design of drainage systems, helping out with project management and written reports. Day to day will vary based on the project but lots of report writing, or using software like microdrainage.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, the responsibility I had increased through out the year once I had become more experienced and confident in what I was doing. I was given responsibility in different areas, including team socials and meeting minutes, to checking work and creating drawings for projects.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have devolved my technical skills from being exposed to lots of new software like microdrainage and have further developed my CAD skills. I have become better at report writing and knowing the tone to write the report or emails. Organisation and time management has also been developed, earning to manage and prioritise work.

My team were really supportive and were always ready to answer questions and explain anything I was unsure about. There were different points of contact I could have, including a buddy.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The office had a really welcoming and social able atmosphere, with chances to get involved in social activities outside of work. The team had a great atmosphere, with being willing to help and learn from each other.
