Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.

Over the course of this insight day, I heard from the Early Careers team, Partners, and trainees. I learned about how a science background fits a law practice, and the Winston Taylor team explained that the issues in law are similar to the ones in STEM, even though the way you study is very different. They also covered how the SQE and training contract work, which practice areas to explore as a trainee, and what assessors look for: analytical and commercial skills, and the ability to 'think like a business adviser'.

What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?

The open day gave me a clear view of how Winston Taylor works as a business. I learned that trainees rotate through four seats in the training contract, the structure of the PGDL and SQE, and all the opportunities available at Winston Taylor, including ability to for secondments, their IPRD team, The PGDip they offer and the SQE+ masters.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, mainly commercial awareness and communication. Hearing how trainees advise clients on issues like AI regulation, copyright and data protection taught me to ask why a development matters to a firm’s clients, not just what has changed. Although, I will continue to develop my skills over the course of the next year, since this Open Day was only for a few hours.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The atmosphere was really friendly and supportive. The trainees described a team where you can make mistakes and learn from them, and they said they bonded with their cohort through studying for the SQE together. They also spoke about the firm’s involvement in the training contract and SQE.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?

I really enjoyed it, mainly because it made a legal career feel concrete. I came in as a chemistry and mathematics student unsure how my background would fit, and hearing from trainees describe their own transitions from STEM to law answered that. The most engaging part was learning how closely their work connects to current issues like AI and copyright, which made me want to follow those developments more closely.
