STEM Open Day Attendee Review

We started off receiving a talk from the partners about the specialities and main selling points of the firm which differentiates Winston Taylor from the rest. This includes the exceptional cultural fit of the firm. We were informed of he 4 major focuses of the firm which includes major litigation, critical transaction, strategic IP and private wealth - which a lot of top city firms don’t cover so the private wealth in particular sets Winston Taylor apart. We were informed of the firm’s other important achievements, such as bringing the 2 firms together on 2nd June, the firm’s many inclusion networks, and the firm’s required 25 hours of pro bono per year. We were then informed of the opportunity for masters, the firm’s vacation schemes and training contracts, and how the firm supports their trainees for the SQE exams.
We were given a talk from a trainee solicitor and an apprentice about commercial awareness, including what it really is, why it is important, and how to build and maintain commercial awareness, followed by informing us about the commercial exercise the firm gives their canidates as part of the application. It ended with a Q&A session. We were then taught the SWOT and STARR method for answering interview questions.
We had a very nice lunch provided by the firm where we did some good networking. Afterwards, we had another talk which went on very n-depth about the different types of law the firm practices and what the firm has specifically done and achieved. Then we had another talk from three newly qualified solicitors with the firm who were all graduates from STEM degrees, they talked about their journey into law and what it was like as a trainee with Winston Taylor. One memorable thing they mentioned is the GDL advantage for non-law students who had to recall information they studied only 6 months ago. They also mentioned the STEM background advantage as a lawyer, among many other things, which also ended with a very informative Q&A session.
Finally, we had an amazing talk from the early recruitment team about the application process and application tips, followed by a Q&A session, which was greatly informative.

I received very detailed and informative insight about the roles available, and was able to directly ask people in those current positions about any queries or gaps I had about their own roles.
I have a great, in-depth understanding of all of the roles, all thanks to the STEM open day.
