Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role involves taking part in a rotation program where I am assigned to different teams every 5 to 6 months. For my current rotation, I am in a team specialising in backend tech stack. I participate in daily standup and report tasks that I currently work on, and in meetings where we plan and address tasks for the team (aka squad) and the department (aka tribe). My projects include improving the company project - the search engine, and internal tools.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I believe I have been given quite a few responsibilities right at the start. I am given the opportunity to be part of some impactful projects and contribute. Although I am a new joiner, I am encouraged to have a go at working on important tasks and get full support during the whole process. You get to run team meetings, decide on how you go about a tasks and review other colleagues' work and approve them.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt a substantial amount of skills. They include but not limit to my front end and back end knowledge like Python, Java and React. Specifically, I learnt how to work on large scale production code where you have to piece together multiple mircoservices and test the code in various scale and environment. I also learnt to work within the team and across team improving my communication skills and public speaking skills when it comes to presentation.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I have been receiving a huge amount of support on a day to day basis. You are matched with a buddy who is a senior in the company. If you're technical, you are also matched with another buddy who has a technical background. Since I am a new joiner who has participated in the rotation program, I can also reach out to the program organiser whenever I have questions about where I am and how I am doing.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
In general, the company has an inclusive and blame free culture. It is believed that we are more inclined to learn and succeed if we are free to experiment and try new things, so we blame the process, not the individual. We want everyone to have a work life balance and enjoy working there, so the company cares a lot about employees' well being and most importantly invested a lot into our benefits that promotes that.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed the placement a lot. A lot of induction and onboarding have been put in place to make sure we have a warm welcome and settle in as quick as possible. We are given the chance to network with other new joiners and other people across the company so that we have a closer relationship. We also have a lot of activities planned throughout the year so apart from work, we are not missing out on fun!

What advice would you give to others applying to Skyscanner
The advice I would give to potential candidates would be that not only does Skyscanner value hard skills like technical skills if the role is software engineering, but soft skills are also just as valued. Soft skills are important because it is a part of the company's culture that we want to work with nice people with an inclusive and teamwork mindset. Also, when in interviews, it would be beneficial to have a customer oriented mindset when solving interview problems.
