Graduate Software Engineer Review

I am a Full Stack Software Engineer and am currently focusing on a project called Save to List which will allow travellers to save flight itineraries for easy access and also be able to interact with them by allowing price alerts, directing to booking panel, removing items, etc. On a daily basis, I meet with my team to discuss the progress we've done, pair with teammates on different technical problems and talk to other squads involved with the work. I work in the backend and in the frontend and this allows me to get a better understanding of the whole flow, get exposure to different technologies and learn from variety of people.

Yes, I am given responsibilities on a daily basis. This is great for me because I feel that I am contributing to the team and making an impact. It did not happen all at the beginning, though, my manager made sure that I do not get too overwhelmed and I was introduced new responsibilities gradually and slowly. I started working on some non-goal tasks to get up to speed with everything and to not have too much pressure put so that I can learn a lot while doing them. Then, I was gradually given more and more urgent tasks so that I can get used to that as well.

I have learned a lot of new skills and developed further many of my existing skills. Most of the skills I learned are technical - for example, web development using React, creating and testing components, emitting events, etc. I have also learned how to be more persuasive and how to plan me time better. Some of skills I have developed are taking the initiative more often, communicating clearly my points and facilitating meetings. I am sure I will develop even more skills in the days to come.

I have been given a lot of support and guidance so far. Everyone in the team has been really nice, checking regularly how I'm doing and always been there if i have a question. I have been assigned a buddy who helped me with every single question and problem I had. In terms of work, I was first given unambiguous tasks which were explained in detail in the ticket so that I can focus on the development and the learning and not so much on understanding what is asked. Then, they started giving me more ambiguous and difficult tasks for whichI had to speak with variety of people in order to solve them.

The culture and atmosphere is better than I expected. Everyone has been really nice and supportive, not only in the squad but everyone who I met so far. I have been able to chat with people on variety of topics regardless of their position. Also, the people in the office made me feel comfortable by showing me around, wanting to talk to me so we get to know each other, coming to me when i am having lunch or coffee on my own and that has been really great.

I am enjoying the graduate program very much, I can say it has been excellent so far and I cannot wait to see what will come next. From day one I have been feeling like I am in the right place and surrounded by the right people and that does make a difference for my motivation and well-being. I go to work every day really wanting to learn more and spend more time with my colleagues.
