Graduate Software Engineer Review

I am a software engineer graduate currently in iOS mobile development. I work with swift (programming language) and UIKit to develop features planned out with the squad and project manager. On a day-to-day basis, you will have a standup where you overview your current task progression and any future tasks planned ahead. Early in my rotation, I started with programming courses to get you used to the programming language and tools the squad uses in development.

In the starting weeks, I wasn't given as much responsibility as expected as I'm still a fresh graduate and haven't worked in mobile development before or used the main programming language in this rotation. I mostly worked on self-development to get ready to get into production development, and eventually, after a few weeks, I have been assigned tasks that will affect production. I am now at a point where I have more responsibility than ever, and I am sure it will continue to grow as I become more experienced and knowledgable.

Yes, I have learnt several new skills and also developed many. Starting with my soft skills I have significantly developed my communication skills which I used every day with my squad and other colleagues outside my squad and discipline. I have also developed my multitasking skills where I co-developing a feature and also writing documentation along at the same time. My hard skills such as programming in general have improved a lot since I've been apart of production.

The support and guidance I have received have been amazing, I have been assigned an office buddy and a technical buddy. My office buddy helps me get used to the day-to-day activities within the office, understand the office layout, and other elements that are related directly to my discipline. My technical buddy is a squad member who I do pair programming with and discuss technical work with. When I bump into barriers they are there to help me out and help me understand how to overcome such barriers and prevent them in the future.

The company culture is great at Skyscanner. Everyone is friendly and easy to talk to, there are several opportunities to meet new people in your home office and other offices that are located elsewhere. Everyone is treated equally which I love because there isn't a hard visible hierarchy where seniors look down at you, this doesn't happen at Skyscanner. We take pride in our work which will positively impact our customers who we refer to as travellers.

I fully enjoy my placement, it has surpassed my expectations. I am doing exactly what I've wanted to do and it satisfies the job description. The employees are kind and very patient which I love since I'm still in my learning phase and asking a lot of questions, so I can understand things. The placement is very stimulating and I am always developing my skills day-to-day which will be super useful in the future.
