Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I worked as an intern in JLL's Capital Markets team, which advises investors, developers and operators on the sale of assets. The team runs live bid processes and market advisory work across the sector, and I was involved in supporting these from day one.
My day to day responsibilities included:
Bid and deal support: Reviewing and analysing bids as they came in updating Bid Review Summaries to reflect current yields, gilts and SONIA rates, and reviewing bid clarifications.
BOVs (Bids/Valuations): Learning to complete Basis of Valuation documents from scratch, including updates to reflect rental uplifts and completing them for additional bidded assets, gaining exposure to the assumptions behind them.
Due diligence: Carrying out due diligence on live opportunities, including document review and joining physical inspections with operators.
Financial and market analysis: Preparing comparable evidence, building Excel-based analysis (rental history tables, line graphs etc),
Market research and reporting: Preparing market updates for clients , covering sector-relevant regulatory changes and contributing to asset books and investment memoranda (IMs).

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, definitely, and it grew as the weeks went on. Right from week one I was put onto live deals rather than just shadowing, helping with due diligence and site inspections on active projects. By week two I was already working independently on BOVs, applying real commercial assumptions that fed into actual bid processes.
I was also trusted with client-facing work, like pulling together analysis for a client request and preparing materials to a deadline for a senior colleague's response to an external stakeholder. I regularly reviewed incoming bids and updated summary documents with live market data, which then went straight into client materials. I was properly embedded in the team's day-to-day workload, which gave me a real sense of ownership over what I was doing.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, quite a few. Technically, I learned how to put together BOVs from scratch, which was completely new to me, and got much more confident with financial modelling and Excel more generally, especially after picking up some great shortcuts from a modelling masterclass that I've been using ever since. I also developed my skills in building clear graphs and charts for presentations, learning how to make them easy to read and tailoring them based on feedback.
Beyond the technical side, I really developed my commercial awareness, understanding how yields, interest rates and wider market trends actually feed into live decision making rather than just reading about it. My research and analytical skills improved too, from pulling together data for client requests to writing market updates on sector-specific issues.
I'd also say my communication and networking skills came on a lot. Presenting work to senior colleagues, attending client meetings, and proactively reaching out to other teams for coffee chats all pushed me out of my comfort zone in a good way. By the end, I felt a lot more confident speaking up in meetings and building relationships across the business, which isn't something you can really learn from a textbook.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I felt really well supported throughout. I had regular catch ups with my manager to talk through how things were going and set goals, plus check ins with HR to see how I was settling in more broadly. I also had a buddy who I could go to with any questions, and it was really valuable hearing about her own career journey and how she'd found her feet at JLL.
Feedback was a big part of it too. I asked for feedback along the way and always got something constructive back that I could actually put into practice, rather than anything too vague. On top of that, there was a proper structured induction and learning journey at the start, which helped me get up to speed quickly, along with training sessions like a modelling masterclass that built on what I was picking up day to day.
More generally, the whole team was really approachable. Whenever I had questions on live work, someone was always happy to explain things properly rather than just leaving me to figure it out alone, which made a big difference to how quickly I was able to get stuck in.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Honestly, one of the best parts of the internship. The atmosphere was really friendly and welcoming from day one, and people were genuinely happy to make time for you even when they were busy with live deals. I never felt like I was just "the intern" who got left out of things. There was a strong culture of networking and cross-team collaboration as well. People were keen to introduce me to others across the business, and I had some great chats with people in totally different sectors, which gave me a much broader view of how the wider business works together.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed it a lot, honestly more than I expected going in. What made it for me was the mix of things I got to do. One day I'd be working through numbers on a BOV, and the next I'd be out on a site visit or sitting in on a client meeting, so it never felt repetitive. I also just really enjoyed the people I worked with, from my day to day team to everyone I met through coffee chats and networking, which made the whole experience feel a lot more personal.
By the end, I was genuinely sad it was coming to a close, which I think says a lot about how much I got out of it. It's given me a much clearer picture of what a career in this space could actually look like, and made me even more keen to keep building on what I've learned here.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLL to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to JLL

I'd say don't be afraid to ask questions, even ones that feel obvious. Everyone here remembers being new at some point, and people would much rather explain something properly than have you guess and get it wrong. Asking questions early actually helped me build trust with the team much faster.
