Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at JLL?

Mixed. I have met some amazing people which is what stands out the most. Some of the teams that I have rotated into have been good experience, varied and enjoyable but other teams that I have been in have been uninterested in my development which can be demoralising.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

I have run valuations for loan security purposes for individual residential assets and for larger portfolios. Most of the work here is doing comparable research but also includes drafting the valuation reports and running the actual valuations.
I have also been in a transactional team, doing most of the research and creating of marketing materials for disposal of the assets. For this I also often ran development appraisals and market appraisals for the pricing of the asset. This team also included more networking with other agents to source potential acquisitions and gain a better understanding of market sentiment.
I have also been in an estate agency office which, not helped by the market, has meant that I have had little work to do and have spent time focusing on writing my APC submission.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

2/5
In one team I was able to contribute a lot and felt very valued. In another I was able to contribute meaningfully sporadically but often found myself with little to do other than 'gradmin'. In the third team I have not been able to contribute and have felt like more of a burden than an asset.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

2/5
Whilst the compensation is inline with other surveying graduate roles, compared to peers in other markets it does not pay well as a graduate. Benefits are also mostly skewed towards more senior employees as most are in the form of compensation towards already expensive outgoings such as physiotherapy, medical etc (JLL also has very generous paternity leave). These benefits do require a contribution taken from your salary which I cannot afford to do

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

3/5
Whilst there is a lot of support for passing your APC, as JLL pays for the training course from 'APC Success' which most other firms do not, I feel like it is a struggle to pick up genuine experience that would make you desirable to other employees.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

2/5
This is more of a focus on getting the mandatory CPD hours rather than a focus on genuine development. The company generally seems reluctant to spend any money on training, especially in the residential department, given that grads on the commercial and capital markets pathways were signed up to a very highly regarded real estate finance course but residential graduates were not.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

3/5
All the correct systems are put in place with Buddy's for new grads, line managers, and a more senior director who is responsible for the graduates. However the contribution of these is obvisouly very dependent on the individual

How is your work-life balance?

4/5
I can for the most part leave in good time, typically between 5:30-6:00pm and I arrive typically around 8:30am. On occasion when there is a tight deadline and I am having to juggle multiple projects I will have to work later but this is rare and reasonable. There is a definite difference in culture between the valuations side, which has a stronger emphasis on work life balance and the transactional and consultancy side which will swing more in terms of work demand.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

3/5
The culture is again quite mixed. I do think JLL focus on hiring people who contribute towards a positive culture with most people being very likeable and positive people. Again though there is a split from what I have seen between valuations and capital markets in which valuations are very much there to do their job and then leave, with little emphasis on atmosphere and culture (for example when I was in valuations for a year, many of the department didn't go to the xmas party for trivial reasons and I only had a drink with my team on maybe 2 occasions). On the contrary in capital markets people are generally much more positive and focussed on creating a culture and including the grads (I would go for a drink with at least someone from the team at least once a month and would never be expected to pay). Obviously going for drinks are not an exact measure for culture but in this case it does represent it well.

How would you rate JLL initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

2/5
I am unsure of what initiatives there are.

How would you rate JLL CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

2/5
I am unsure of what initiatives there are.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLL to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend JLL as I think most importantly the people here are great. However I would not recommend the residential graduate scheme as of right now as the market is struggling a lot which is then reflected in the department and has meant that I have struggled to feel like I can contribute and also feel like opportunities will be limited for once I look for a permanent team.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

3/5
For the most part it met my expectations and has been enjoyable. What I did not expect and is disappointing is that on my pathway we have no influence over preferences for rotations which most other companies have a system for. In addition to this I did not expect to be placed in a small estate agents office for 6 months as this is not surveying.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to JLL?

Always prepare as much as possible. I know it is difficult applying for multiple grad schemes and balancing work/studies but those that are succefful are the ones that are the best prepared. It is very obvious if you are trying to wing it. However do also be yourself as much as you can as well as being positive - after I was hired I was told that along with performing well in the interviews etc, one of the main reasons I was hired was because I seemed like I was happy to be here and that I just seemed to fit. With this point - do not get too disheartened if unsuccessful as it likely won't be that you are not good enough but will more likely be that someone else was just a better fit and this is something that you cannot change. The right fit will come
