Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I work in a backend squad. All squads work with Agile principles, so we work in sprints. We have a stand up meeting every morning. Depending on the day, we have sprint planning and sprint reviews. I dedicate some amount of time to learn for the tickets I am assigned, and I often pair with other engineers. Our squad deals with a lot of infrastructure, so there is a lot of cross squad collaboration. As a part of the graduate programme, there are sessions in place for our personal development. Since I am an accessibility champion, I will have meetings with my "pod" or a more wide accessibility meet up with multiple pods.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
It was surprising how much responsibility I was given from the get-go. For example, I was given a ticket that required us to build something for another squad. It was so cool to see how that worked, but it was a big responsibility, something I wasn't expecting.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have never worked with AWS before. By the end of the first month, I learnt about S3, CloudFront, Route 53, CloudFormation, IAM and a lot about Security! This is my first time working with Agile practices formally, so it was interesting to see how sprints are structured. There's a lot of knowledge sharing encouraged, and you can reach out to anyone or go through Confluence if you want to learn more about a certain topic.

As mentioned before, a LOT of support is provided, within the squad and outside. There is a tutoring programme in place, where different engineers provide some time off their week to teach others on a topic they're more familiar with.
