Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?

Great experience, I have been well integrated into the team and handle a decent amount of responsibility on the project. I have been put through many paid training courses, from Drone Training and 4x4 offroad use, to Site Safety Supervisor Training Scheme's and many more.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

Varied responsibility with option on the graduate programme to focus on specific areas of interest. Targeting specific items I need to develop my chartership applications whilst under the Graduate scheme. I have been given great exposure to programme acceleration and optimisation, project mobilisation, and dealing with OEM and suppliers, while managing a small team to develop 4D models to be used in site briefings and setting to work.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
I'm often not referred to as a "Graduate" but rather a full project engineer which is usually not formalised until the scheme is finished and signed off by senior leadership. I contribute to many areas of the project which means every week is different.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

5/5
For a site based role I was given a company car and subsistence allowance to relocate to Aberdeen. This will continue whilst i am site based on this project. I can also claim millage and have a travel allowance for my journeys home at weekends. This is incredibly beneficial to support with relocating and travel costs.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
I am gaining invaluable experience by being involved on such a flagship project. I am learning how to perform my role to the highest level, at times this is challenging as there is pressure associated but this has ultimately driven me to work harder, look for faster and more appropriate solution

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
Personal development is at the center of my regular reviews with my line manager. We discuss what is needed to develop my chartership competencies and from there can either target specific areas of work to gain exposure, or can be allocated a course to develop knowledge or skills.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
Always listened to, and feel like my future is invested in within the company

How is your work-life balance?

4/5
Typical working week on site or travelling for work can reduce my personal time, but i am compensated in other ways such as early finishes on Fridays, or absorbing travel time into my contracted hours.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

5/5
Strong focus on positivity, personal development and culture. Very inclusive and welcoming. And often accommodating to personal commitments or circumstances.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
Very accommodating, we often host many events/lunches in the office to celebrate other cultures. Strong focus on mental health, and fitness discounts.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

5/5
We are offered 2 paid volunteering days per year which we can organise with our social value team. I have been fortunate enough to do a number of media outputs, such as interviews with national newspapers, promotional videos for local recruitment and others.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Great place to work, strong focus on career progression, freedom to make what you want of your role. Support to push you as fast as you can keep up with.
Great for getting up to speed building a career after so much time spent in university.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5
The advertisement for my role was quite vague, but this allowed me to build that role myself and choose what i wanted to focus on.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

Be yourself, be curious and don't be shy to ask questions. Enthusiasm to learn is the biggest driving factor for success on the programme.
