Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?

My experience at Balfour Beatty has been really positive. I've had the opportunity to work on some interesting projects (EGL2, HS2 and smaller DNO projects), develop new skills and learn from experienced people. The team has been supportive, and it's a good place to grow and gain exposure to different aspects of the industry.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

As an Assistant Planner, my role mainly involves developing and maintaining project programmes, tracking progress and supporting project teams with planning and reporting. I work closely with different disciplines, which helps me understand how all parts of a project come together.
The part I enjoy most is solving problems and finding ways to improve how project information is presented and used. I also enjoy working on different projects, as each one brings new challenges and opportunities to learn something new. The variety of work and the chance to develop new skills have been the highlights of the role for me.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
My role gives me plenty of opportunities to contribute and make a difference. The work I do supports the wider project team and it's rewarding to see the outputs being used to help with decision-making and reporting. I've always felt comfortable sharing ideas and suggestions and my team has been supportive and appreciative of the work I contribute. I feel valued and trusted with meaningful responsibilities, which has helped me grow in the role.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

5/5
I'm happy with the overall package and feel it reflects the work I do and the opportunities available. The benefits I value most are the pension, annual leave, company car and the training opportunities, as they've helped me develop professionally while maintaining a good work-life balance. The support for career development is also something I've really appreciated.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
My role has prepared me well for my future career. I've had the chance to build new skills, take on different challenges and gain experience working with a range of people and projects. The variety of work has helped me develop both technically and professionally and I've grown in confidence as a result.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I was developing new and existing skills throughout my time in the role. A lot of the learning came from day-to-day experience, working with different teams and taking on new challenges. The formal training was a good complement, helping me build on what I was learning in practice and giving me more confidence in my role.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
The support I received was really good overall. My manager and colleagues were approachable and always willing to help when I had questions or needed guidance. I was given opportunities to learn, take on new responsibilities and develop my skills, while still having support when I needed it. The regular communication and willingness of people to share their knowledge made settling into the role much easier.

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
My work-life balance has been good overall. The mix of working from home and being in the office has worked well for me, as it provides flexibility while still giving me the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in person. I've generally been able to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal time.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

5/5
The culture has been welcoming and supportive from my experience. People are approachable, willing to help and there is a strong focus on teamwork. Regular team meetings, both in person and on Teams, help everyone stay connected, share updates and support each other when needed.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
I've always found Balfour Beatty to be a welcoming place to work. People are respectful, supportive and easy to get along with, regardless of background or experience. Everyone is encouraged to contribute, and I've always felt comfortable being part of the team.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

5/5
One thing that stood out to me was the opportunity to take part in volunteering activities. I volunteered at a Jobcentre in Bridlington, where I supported people who were not currently in employment, education or training. It was a rewarding experience and a good opportunity to share my own experiences while helping others explore their options. Experiences like this show that the company encourages employees to get involved in supporting local communities and making a positive impact beyond the day-to-day role.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I've had the opportunity to work on interesting projects, develop new skills and work alongside supportive colleagues who are always willing to help. The mix of office and remote working has given me a good work-life balance and there have been opportunities to get involved in things outside of my day-to-day role.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5
The recruitment process gave me a good understanding of what the role would involve, and the day-to-day work was very much in line with that. There were also opportunities to get involved in areas I hadn't expected, which helped me learn new skills and gain experience beyond the core responsibilities of the role.

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

My advice would be to be yourself and be willing to learn. You don't need to know everything from day one, but showing a positive attitude, asking questions and being open to new challenges goes a long way. I'd also recommend making the most of the onboarding process and getting to know people across the business, as everyone I worked with was approachable and willing to help.
