Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?

My experience at Balfour Beatty has been highly positive and rewarding. As a Civil Engineering Graduate, I have gained valuable exposure to both site operations and engineering activities, allowing me to develop my technical knowledge while building practical construction experience. I have been given responsibility from an early stage and have had the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals who have supported my development. The variety of challenges, collaborative working environment, and focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement have helped me grow both professionally and personally.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

My role involves supporting the delivery of highway and civil engineering works through site supervision, setting out, quality assurance, design coordination, and technical problem-solving. Responsibilities include reviewing drawings and specifications, managing site records, coordinating with subcontractors, undertaking site inspections, supporting environmental and safety requirements, and ensuring works are delivered in accordance with project standards. I also assist with surveys, utility coordination, temporary works considerations, and the preparation of project documentation. The aspects I enjoy most are being involved throughout the entire project lifecycle, from developing engineering solutions through to overseeing their successful construction on site. I enjoy seeing plans become reality, solving technical challenges, and working closely with a diverse team to deliver safe, high-quality outcomes.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
My role provides a strong opportunity to contribute meaningfully to project delivery. I am trusted with responsibilities that have a direct impact on construction activities, quality outcomes, and programme delivery. My ideas and input are welcomed by the wider team, and I feel supported in taking ownership of tasks and developing solutions to challenges. The collaborative culture encourages learning and continuous improvement, and I feel valued through the trust placed in me, the feedback I receive, and the opportunities provided to broaden my knowledge and experience across different aspects of the project.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

4/5
I feel that my compensation package fairly reflects my role and responsibilities as a Civil Engineering Graduate. The benefits package provides good support and includes valuable offerings such as pension contributions, annual leave, employee discounts, wellbeing resources, and opportunities for professional development. I particularly value the investment in training and development, as it supports both my current role and long-term career progression. I believe the overall package is competitive and recognises the contribution graduates make to project delivery.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

5/5
My role is providing excellent preparation for my future career by exposing me to a wide range of engineering and construction activities. Working on live infrastructure projects has allowed me to develop both technical and practical skills, while gaining experience in quality assurance, site operations, design coordination, safety management, and stakeholder communication. The responsibility I am given, combined with support from experienced colleagues, is helping me build the knowledge, confidence, and professional judgement needed to progress within the industry.

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I have had significant opportunities to develop both new and existing skills through a combination of formal training and hands-on experience. The graduate programme, internal training courses, and support from colleagues have helped strengthen my technical knowledge, while day-to-day involvement in site activities has enhanced my problem-solving, communication, planning, and project delivery skills. The variety of challenges and responsibilities within my role continues to provide valuable learning opportunities and supports my ongoing professional development.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
I have received a high level of support throughout my time at Balfour Beatty from my line manager, colleagues, and the wider project team. Regular guidance, constructive feedback, and access to experienced professionals have helped me develop both technically and professionally. I feel comfortable seeking advice when needed and am encouraged to take on new responsibilities while knowing support is available. The combination of mentoring, collaborative working, and a positive team environment has been invaluable in helping me progress within my role.

How is your work-life balance?

5/5
My work-life balance is generally very good, and I am able to manage both my professional responsibilities and personal commitments effectively. The project I am currently working on is close to home, which reduces commuting time and allows for a better balance between work and personal life. While project deadlines and site activities can occasionally require additional time and flexibility, the team recognises the importance of wellbeing and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Balfour Beatty's flexible working approach, including the option to choose one day each week to either start later or finish earlier, provides additional flexibility and helps employees balance work commitments with personal responsibilities. Combined with supportive management and effective workload planning, this creates a positive working environment that supports both wellbeing and productivity.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

5/5
Balfour Beatty has a positive, inclusive, and professional culture where safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement are strongly emphasised. Employees are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and contribute to project success regardless of their level of experience. I have found the working environment to be welcoming and supportive, with colleagues willing to share knowledge and help others develop. The company's values are evident in day-to-day activities, creating a culture where people feel respected, trusted, and motivated to perform at their best.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

5/5
Balfour Beatty demonstrates a strong commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility through its policies, training programmes and overall workplace culture. I have experienced an environment where people are treated with respect, valued for their individual contributions, and encouraged to share different perspectives and ideas. The company actively promotes an inclusive culture where everyone has the opportunity to develop and progress regardless of their background. This creates a welcoming and supportive working environment where employees feel respected, included and able to perform at their best.

How would you rate Balfour Beatty CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

5/5
Balfour Beatty places significant importance on Corporate Social Responsibility and demonstrates this through its commitment to supporting local communities, protecting the environment, and delivering projects responsibly. On the M65 J5 scheme, I have seen a strong focus on minimising disruption to the public, reducing environmental impacts through measures such as dust suppression and material reuse, and engaging positively with local stakeholders. The company also encourages volunteering, community engagement and sustainable construction practices, which contribute to leaving a positive legacy beyond the completion of the project. These initiatives reinforce Balfour Beatty's commitment to creating long-term value for both communities and the environment.
