Industrial Placement Student Review

Industrial placement student undertaking their final year undergraduate (MChem) research project at the host company. Day-to-day tasks included planning and running experiments, collecting and analysing/interpreting data, collating data for weekly group presentations.

I was able to work increasingly independently throughout the placement - from 6 months in to the end, I was working fully independently, only consulting my manager when needed.
Towards the end of my placement, I was also able to supervise a Year 12 intern project.

I have consolidated key laboratory practical skills, but was able to develop a plethora of new skills, notably surrounding flow chemistry, automation and high-throughput chemistry.

My supervisor provided me with appropriate guidance throughout the project - when I was working more independently, my supervisor was available to discuss challenges or future work. During planned absences, my supervisor discussed plans and possible workarounds/other places for support should challenges arise. In addition, the wider team in my lab(s) were also approachable and able to provide support/guidance when necessary,

Everyone was friendly and approachable, and fostered an enjoyable, hard-working and motivated culture.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to carry out a chemistry-based placement as a part of a degree, or for any graduates/post-graduates looking for chemistry-based lab roles.
