Commercial Haematology Intern Review

Its about supporting the heme team on commercial initiatives for the international launch of Vertex’s first hemoglobinopathy gene-editing therapy. Whilst there I gained hands-on experience in AI tool evaluation, digital design for product readiness and market access.

You're given a lot of responsibility in the role, there is a lot of work to be done and you'll definitely get exposure to a lot of departments whilst there.

They let me work in Adobe Creative Suite as I have prior experience on some software, so they're very good at taking advantage of what you already know and building on it further to boost your confidence in a professional setting. They do really good courses on presentation and communication skills which will elevate your performance in both.

Throughout the internship you are never alone, you get assigned your manager, mentor and buddy (someone close to your age). It's a really strong support system and you can go to each person with specific issues, its a great balance for your peace of mind. You can discuss work issues, interpersonal issues and you'll receive advice and guidance on just about everything. Everyone there is also very happy to connect and support you there.

It's a great atmosphere and I settled into the role really quickly because they put you on the right track with regards to training and goal-setting to set you up for success in the role. Depending on the department it can be quite fast-paced but it's a fantastic environment to learn in quickly. Lots of DEI initiatives, and events to take part in and socialise bi-weekly, there will always be one around the corner to look forward to.

The internship exceeded my expectations for personal growth and just the amount of work that I got to take part in. The commercial team is highly cross-functional and every day you learn something about various departments and macro events occurring outside of Vertex. I had such an enjoyable time at the company, the confidence boost after the role is something I'll never forget. They really bring you along with them no matter how long you're there for.
